Looking for recommendations on a handheld flashlight for running trails at night. I usually run w/ a head lamp, which works really well for regular paced runs, but looking for something extra to supplement and add a bit of depth perception since this will be used for faster paced racing.
check out Fenix… my brother is a flashaholic and has a few. Bright, lightweight, and good battery life.
I have a few of these and think they are they best on the planet

.
I use two Peztl Tikkas, one on my head and one in my hand. I shorten the headband to make it a handle and have the light on the outside of my fingers (hand in a fist). Works great, lots of light and directional.

Not sure how big you were thinking. It doesn’t get any brighter than this for it’s size.

Fenix has some very bright lights for their size. But, another alternative to consider is rigging a waist belt for any one of the many headlamps around instead of a headband. As you mentioned, positioning a light at waist level gives much better shadow definition.
I was issued the Pelican 7060 for my job. Yes it’s bright as hell but it’s got issues and plus it might be kinda too big for running.
I prefer the Surefire LED flashlights. In fact that is my back up light when my Pelican fails.

Yeah, it might be just a tad large. I personally don’t have one but quite a few guys at work do and they really like them. I’m still using my 8 year old stinger. The only issue I ever had with mine was a melted lens after leaving in on in the holder.
