Halvard and Crew: Sunday's 50K World Championship in Norway

There are probably going to be half a million fans in and around the stadium in Holmenkollen for the men’s 50K at the World Championships. It started at 1 pm CET, so they should be well past halfway through the race right now…I can’t seem to find live coverage anywhere on the internet , including Eurosport…darn. Holmenkollen, if I recall correctly is where Canada won its first world cup, by Pierre Harvey right after the Calgary Olympics:

What’s interesting watching the video is how slow the skis glided back then. The poles were obviously heavier and the wax was. Pierre also won the first triathlon I raced back in 1985, by running a 48 min 15K off a 2K swim and 55K bike.

Canadian gold medalists in the sprint relay Alex Harvey (Pierre’s son) and Devon Kershaw should be in the mix, although Kershaw had a sore throat late in the week.

Men det är klart vi måste tro att Hellner har någon chans mot Northug, även om denne fantastiske norrman tycks omutlig. Jag tror dock att Hellner behöver hitta på något en bra stund innan vi går mot mål. Jag skulle gärna se honom göra en “Johaug” och försöka sticka. Men vi har bara kommit lite drygt halva loppet, så det är väl inte riktigt dags för det ännu.

Han skulle kunna ligga död i en kista bredvid spåret och jag skulle ändå vara orolig för att han skulle komma tillbaka och ta det på upploppet. Men han ligger nog säkert placerad precis där han vill i fältet, 18:e plats vid mellantiden.

Hellner och Olsson var det, men efter skidbytet är de lite för långsamma båda två. Att det ska vara så svårt att byta skidor fort.

the big group is breaking now. A few kilometers ago there were 40 together. A few guys just attacked on the biggest hill, and now there are a few small groups. 22 in the front pack. 12 k to go. And there is not so much snow to see, only red norwegian flags. They are going to the last ski change I think.

The course has 2000m of climbing in 50K…ouch! That’s around 400m more than climbing Mont Ventoux…too bad I can’t find live coverage because it would be fun to watch the ski exchanges in the “pits” just like in Formula 1 auto racing. I found that aspect of the strategy really interesting last year in the Vancouver Olympic.

I don’t watch xc skiing often, but I was already thinking that there were more downhills then normal.
The ski change was cool, they all changed, and lots of noise in the stadion. The front group still together, to me it looks like they are going all out but nobody is strong enough to make a difference. It could become an interesting sprint this way.

Wish I was up there today - huge crowds.
They estimated that about 700.000 people where up in Holmenkollen watching during the the last week!

The russian had a very strong last hill but the norwegians managed to just hang on. Northug was strongest on the last few hundred meters in the stadion (flat I think).

The “usual” finish - Northug just punched it at the end of the last rise and descended into the finish with a small gap.

I thought Harvey was 4th but am not sure. Babikov was with the front group till the last 5 or 8K. A couple guys crashed out of the lead group on the last sweeping downhills - not sure if he was one of them.

Am curious where Bill Demong ends up.

What a finish and what a day to be a Norwegian. It is estimated that around the course of 8.3km (5m) 105,000 spectators made this a day to remember for all of the athletes. I have competed in Holmenkollen and those hills are brutal.
