I am racing the Eagleman Half-IM next June 11, I enjoy running and would like to compete in a spring race. I am originally from Long Island and my Dad used to always run the Long-Island Half-Marathon every year so it is kind of a special race for me.
This would probably be a “B” priority race for me, I would like to do well, but Eagleman would still be my focus. So, 5 weeks out from Eagleman, should I do the Half-Marathon or the full?
This is a common question here and there is no right answer:
If the goal is to run a marathon for the sake of running a marathon, then I say go for it. However, know that running a full marathon typically requires 3 - 4 weesk a serious down-time to REALLY recover and that’s why in the year of - will NOT help you with your triathlon running.
If the goal over the winter/spring is to REALLY elevate run performance - never a bad thing in triathlon, then you will look at 10K to 1/2 marathon races to run because if trained for properly and raced properly, this this will REALLY elevate certain key parameters that will help you run faster in standalone running races and triathlons.
Thanks for the input, I have already run a couple marathons, I am more looking at this race as a way to kill two birds with one stone, elevate my run performance and enjoy a race that I think I can do well in. I wasn’t giving enough consideration to recovery so I will probably stick to the half. Thanks again.
Enjoy the half! As you know the full loses it’s appeal after 20 miles. Plus it beats up the body and may lead to injury. Stay injury free and mentally fresh by doing the half!
