Haile Gebrselassie--HTFU?

I know that title is bordering on blasphemy, but is this for real? And does this make Ryan Hall the favorite? (sorry if this has already been posted)

Whats the sense in him racing in conditions that he knows he has difficulty in, when he can be a medal contender in another race?

And no Ryan Hall is not the favorite. He likely isn’t in the top ten favorites.

Exactly. Would you still compete if they told you your next swim would be partially through the sewage reclamation area?

has an American ever come in the top 20 for a world championship or olympic marathon?

“has an American ever come in the top 20 for a world championship or olympic marathon?”

Is this a joke?

Yes.

Well, Frank Shorter won it in 1972, does that count? There are a few others here and there, that’s just the first one off the top of my head.

Link to all marathon finishers since 1896, including where the Americans finished. Americans PWNED in 1908!!

It gets confusing if you take out all the runners we have given green cards and citizenship to from other countries, but off the top of my head, Joan Benoit did pretty well for a few years, and did have the world record…

thanks for all the info. i knew it would be faster to get replies here than to google them.

You should learn optimal search terms. It took me about 30 seconds to get the link to the runners world list.

This is interesting to look at. For all those trying to figure out why times are not faster in Kona now than 20 years ago, have a look at the winning times for the Olympic Marathon over the last 30 years.

I agree. The guy has already won gold at the Olympics. He is at the twilight of his career and instead he will probably run a fall marathon for which he will be paid in excess of 100000$ just to show up at the starting line (plus fat bonuses for potential records).

Actually look back almost 50 years to the 1960 games, and the 2:15 winning time. And he may have run that barefoot too, I know he ran some races barefoot, not sure if he did in these games…You would think that over all those olympic contests that someone would have run a great time. Too much pressure, tatical races, late starts in the heat, but you would think that at least one race would have had good conditions and a fast time over the years… I think that race in 1960 was probably the fastest race if you grade it in a historical perspective…

10,000m - olympic gold in sydney and atlanta
- world champion 93-94-97-99, bronze 01, silver 03

5,000 - silver 93

indoor: gold 3000m 97, gold 3000m and 1500m 99, gold 3000m 03.

half marathon world champ 2001

world best performance: marathon, 1h, 20km

arguably the best long distance runner ever.

I would agree that Ryan Hall is certainly not the favorite, but not in the top ten? Really? And if that is true, do you also expect that he will not finish in the top ten? Cause I’m sayin he medals. No doubt Hall goes top 3 in my mind. Dudes on a roll, if he nails his peak, with God as his co-pilot, anything is possible.

Agreed. 1960 was barefoot and also a world record! His win in 64 was good too, but I pretty sure he had shoes by then.

1976 was won in 2:09:55 only slightly bested in 84 by 2:09:21 which is the current Olympic Record. That is a 24 year old record. As my original post, I think there are parallels to Kona times the last 20 years.
