Had peroneal tendon issues? surgery? How'd it go?

I have a split tear of my peroneal brevis (for those in the know I also have intrasheath subluxation, type B). I figure surgery is in my future sooner or later. Oddly enough, my wife also just had surgery for a small split tear of her brevis as well. She’s had a pretty painful first 3 weeks out from surgery. We hear, and can now confirm, the pain can be pretty intense early on.

Anyone that’s had experience with this surgery, please chime in. How did the recovery ultimately go? Back to full activity? Anyone elect to ignore the tear, suffer through the discomfort and keep swim/bike/running?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

Bump.

Nobody out there had peroneal repair and lived to tell about it?

There are a few threads from last year on this issue. I had a small tear at the insertion–no split tear-from an impact with the corner of my platform holding my comptrainer. I wore a walking boot for 8+ weeks, then on and off for another 4 weeks. After 12 weeks, I still could not ride my bicycle on the trainer due to pain. An additional 4 weeks of recovery did allow me to restart bicycle riding on the trainer at an easy pace. Running was not possible for another 4 weeks and then at a walk-jog-walk routine that had many up and downs due to my Mad Calf Disease. Yes I was followed by the Podiatrist and did have a few sessions with the Physical Therapist who was stunned that I did not lose any strength or AROM after 4 months of just walking and swimming as much as possible.

My daughter had subluxation (intrasheath and… outofsheath?) and shearing of the retinaculum on both ankles. Her tendons were intact though, so I’m not sure her surgery experience would translate to yours. She was in a cast for 4 weeks, a walking boot for 4 weeks, and cleared for full activity after 12. After the cast came off she slowly started swimming (no pushing off wall at first, no breaststroke kick or hard flutter kick at first) and added in PT at the 8 week post surgery mark. She ran towards the end of PT and reported no pain. Some achiness after intense exercise, but otherwise good to go so far.

I had a vertical tear in one of the peroneal tendons. I went through 4 doctors who all misdiagnosed it and wasted my time. This search for an answer took 6 months. Two were podiatrists and one was an orthopedic surgeon. Finally found a second orthopedic surgeon who properly diagnosed it within 2 minutes.

Told me that it was likely a vertical tear and that it wouldn’t show on an MRI, but I had one anyone to make sure it wasn’t something else.

I had surgery in May. I was running in July. I ran a marathon in Sept with no issues.

Thanks for the follow up. Encouraging results!

My wife is 4 wks post op from her surgery. Still quite swollen right behind the malleolus and sore, but improving. Two more weeks, then she’ll start PT with 6 more weeks weight-bearing in the boot. Then hopefully released to start full activity again.

I guess surgery will be in my future. Biking aggravates it. Running makes it sore. Pushing off the wall in the pool even hurts.

Good to read a couple of positive stories. I found several threads on this forum discussing the early stages of diagnosis/treatment, but not much on the long term success.
