All this talk about low testosterone and supplementation got me curious so I had mine tested this week. I am a 44 year old and the number was 485. Do I make you horny, baby!!! Totally shoots down my new Moats based training plan, no way I get that TUE now… Bugger! It’s actually not that high but above the 450 threshold where they say 50% men my age are.
did you have ‘relations’ before? wonder if that would have raised or lowered your number?
Tim

BUT … you obviously are at a disadvantage compared to those who are 1100 (or whatever your upper normal limit is from the lab). So if you believe the male enhancement clinic stuff … you need to be supplemented up to the top of normal … to be fully normal.
Otherwise, you’re only half of fully normal
Dave
Also, did you just finish an easy block of training or a really hard one? I think hard training tends to lower your T levels.
Wow! You just made his day.
He thought he was above normal and now you tell him he’s below. Okay, what’s normal?
You just made me go look back at my last 3 years of tests, and it went 562/495/611. I should be getting another test in the next month, so will see if i’m holding steady, or dropping like a rock. I will be 57 in feb, so not quite at the top of my range, but better than 75% i would say. I did have a kid recently, so got that going for me, but if you saw my wife, you would know any man with a 10 T level could get that one done…(-;
My problem is that i have no detectable growth hormone, and that has been going on for over 6 years. I think one test had a detectable level, but that is it for me. I think that is the biggest reason i cannot train much any more, and recover very slowly these days. Doc says folks my age should have some, but it does diminish quite a bit at my age, oh well, at least i can still chop wood every morning!!

I think it’s like 650 is considered “normal” for my age. But Lord, I trained for 2 Ironman’s this year, cut me some slack! And my wife and I are expecting our first child in March, so that all works.
I find this discussion very interesting. Thank you for the answer on what’s normal: 650. I appreciate that.
Monty says that he doesn’t recover as quickly. Do you have any of these issues?
My husband is in his 60s, which is why I’m very interested in this topic.
Congrats on the baby. We want pics in March.
Thank you! As I have gotten older I seem to require more recovery for sure. I am kind of a curious case study, though, as I discovered my proclivity for endurance sport later in life, really in my mid '30’s. I have only been really training and competing in a meaningful way over the past 7 years. I have been getting progressively faster over that time but I have a feeling I am nearing the inflection point where my age will begin to limit my relative athletic youth and I won;t see those gains anymore and will start to see a decrease in performance.

This is a buncha BS. You train more than me, you’re faster than me and now you have higher T than me. Since you’re aging up to my AG, I’m putting all that shit in my TUE…
Hope the Mrs is doing well!
wow. ST has a long history of “whip it out threads”. this, this is a new one.
i excitedly look forward to the sperm count thread. Capt’n Canada, where are you?
At the tris, I find the men your age can be the most ferocious. You’ve a few more years to go.
I have more aches and pains these days. It’s a struggle to complete a workout sometimes, but I feel so good when I do, both mentally and physically. It’s definitely a daily fight. My minds says I’m 35, but my body is 53.

It would be had my score been 1000! Instead i think it’s somewhat demonstrative of the fact that “low” testosterone levels, such as mine, could easily send someone down the path of looking to supplement. I’m going to ask my docotor if he would recumbent supplements in cases such as mine. it will be curious to hear his thoughts and recommendations (he is also a triathlete). I have no intention of actually supplementing as I want to continue to race and I feel fine.
If you can take supplements and improve your health, I say go for it. I can relate to this.
Why even walk down that road? A bad decision usually starts with a dozen bad decisions beforehand. I just don’t see why you’d want to go there?
He thought he was above normal and now you tell him he’s below. Okay, what’s normal?
He’s completely normal as is Monty and no supplementation is needed … I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of testosterone replacement in some situations. He should get advice from his own doc … but normal is normal and like many things that are measured there is a range. Having higher testosterone than someone else means little unless one is supplementing above normal range or is distinctly low.
If Monty’s doc felt his HGH level was really an issue … he could do a stimulation test of his HGH production … but I suspect he likewise feels its not an issue.
NORMAL!
Dave

One’s that allow me to continue to participate in the sport, for sure. Supplements that would preclude that I would need to have a very serious medical/lifestyle need to make that decision, a decision which would then mean I would no longer participate in the sport. My case isn’t very germane in that regard as my levels aren’t so low as to be cause for any meaningful health issues. But no doubt there are many others, maybe some in the same range I am, who either supplement to feel like they are 25 or so that they can race like they are 25. I have no argument with the former, feel great my man! I take exception with the later and I fear they are legion.
According to my GoogleFu, Monty’s levels are above normal for his age. My totally cursory research mentioned that a lot of men my age are below 450 and are likely being targeted/marketed supplements. I can’t imagine 450 would even be remotely close to being eligable for a TUE from an accredited physician. But i am interested in this issue and is why I started the thread…certainly not to show off.

Agreed.
Hey! Good news, you’re normal.

Its a good thread and great discussion for everyone … you are clearly just normal and healthy. Others do play games with the normal range to take supplemental steroids … I personally would label that as cheating … but I suspect it is rather common, unfortunately.
