Guy to do Ironman Louisville on BMX bike

His point is that everyone already has all they need to do an Ironman.

This is his training:
"Training, I try to swim once a week, 90 minutes, and then once a week I do two or three hours on the bike and a two-hour run.”

I guess TRYING to get that one swim in a week is crucial for completing an Ironman, right?

Is it a single speed or a BMX…either way it’s going to suck for him. Maybe he’ll eat only bananas and drink water only.

A guy did Arizona in 2008 on a BMX singlespeed with 650 road wheels.

When 2,500 people are yelling “look at me!” it takes some creativity to be heard.

Great idea…I mean…“anything is possible”

That is true. I was volunteering in bike transition after the swim at IMAZ 2008, and saw that bike personally. Sign on front of bike that said “Old School”. Guy also had what looked like skateboarder helmet.

thats stupid…just like growing a huge beard or running barefoot. its a stupid publicity thing.

Might be the same guy.

Nothing more than a publicity stunt. Why would you want to ride 112 miles on a BMX bike? Even a late model Schwinn World would get one to the run start faster.

Also, the on-line article does not show it, but in the Courier Journal printed paper, there is a picture of this guy on his BMX bike and he has compression socks on…wtf? Oh, and his helmet is a BMX style helmet.

It will be interesting to see if WTC DQ’s him for an illegal helmet!!!

Nope not the same guy. The guy in AZ was a lot younger. He didn’t seem to want any extra fame out of it, he was just rocking it old school. He definitely finished too.

Actually, I saw him last year rocking out Ironman Florida - the ‘old school ironman’. He has the best attitude and had an awesome race…and for those of you who think he’s doing it for ‘publicity’ - why don’t you race for a good cause?

WIN!

In 07 some guy with a long bushy beard and a beater bike did it in cutoff bluejeans. Anyone have a pic of that guy? He was quite a sight.

On a bmx bike that’s pretty serious. What type of cadence do you think he has to hold to go more than 15mph? Probably like 150.

he tried it in 2008 too but missed the bike cutoff. Funny as shit passing him on my second loop.

Does a BMX bike pass the bike regulations for Ironman?

A couple years ago I considered doing a local sprint triathlon in Chattanooga on a Litespeed tricycle, but then thought that while this might be fun and games to me, it would maybe be disrespectful to others. After all I did have a tri and a road bike. So I decided against what then was truly a marketing thought.

Many years before then I raced Killington stage race and Fitchburg Longsjo Classic on my MTB, but then that was all I had. But I did actually well.

I believe he did it '08 also when I did the race. I wish I had a pic of him.

This is from 2007. Not sure if it’s the same guy…but he looks badass.

That’s him! Thanks Dave.
