A guy did Arizona in 2008 on a BMX singlespeed with 650 road wheels.

That is true. I was volunteering in bike transition after the swim at IMAZ 2008, and saw that bike personally. Sign on front of bike that said “Old School”. Guy also had what looked like skateboarder helmet.
Nothing more than a publicity stunt. Why would you want to ride 112 miles on a BMX bike? Even a late model Schwinn World would get one to the run start faster.
Also, the on-line article does not show it, but in the Courier Journal printed paper, there is a picture of this guy on his BMX bike and he has compression socks on…wtf? Oh, and his helmet is a BMX style helmet.
Nope not the same guy. The guy in AZ was a lot younger. He didn’t seem to want any extra fame out of it, he was just rocking it old school. He definitely finished too.

Actually, I saw him last year rocking out Ironman Florida - the ‘old school ironman’. He has the best attitude and had an awesome race…and for those of you who think he’s doing it for ‘publicity’ - why don’t you race for a good cause?
A couple years ago I considered doing a local sprint triathlon in Chattanooga on a Litespeed tricycle, but then thought that while this might be fun and games to me, it would maybe be disrespectful to others. After all I did have a tri and a road bike. So I decided against what then was truly a marketing thought.
Many years before then I raced Killington stage race and Fitchburg Longsjo Classic on my MTB, but then that was all I had. But I did actually well.
