so, i have the opportunity locally to get a guru bike fit.
i’ve never had a proper bike fit, despite racing all kinds of bikes for . . . 25 years? so it seems like it’s time, especially since on and off i’ve had lower back pain on some of my bikes, and definitely had some spasms out of T2 this summer than cost me time and places on the run.
other nice thing is that my current tri bike is ancient (a 2004 cervelo soloist alu) and doesn’t fit super well; i’d rather get fit on the guru bike than have them try to salvage my fit on the cervelo, since i’m due for some new bikes soon anyway. i also figure a good fit on the road would map over well to my gravel/'cross fit.
the question: the guru fitters say that they fit for road/mtb, but NOT for tri. how useful would my road fit coordinates be in trying to determine my tri fit? any use? none at all? is there a formula that could roughly ‘convert’ my road stack/reach/etc to a tri fit? i’d sort of rather not do this twice if it’s totally useless. i also figure that my tri fit is most important - i’m increasingly racing longer distances, and gravel/road/cross are generally off-season/B-race ‘fun’ for me, whereas tri is my priority.
Well I would get the fit just so you can choose a new road bike. With integrated front ends it is probably even more important to get the size dialed before pulling the trigger.
It will be interetesting to see if your fit changes much from where you currently are and if it is a big improvement. I am probably an outlier, but my road, TT and gravel bike are all very similar, except for slight differences in bar height. If the fit is good on one bike it transfers well to the others.
Pick a different place/fitter. You are trying to go about this correctly but you don’t want to a) try and rough the tri bike fit because it will be totally different than the road bike b) split bike fits across fitters (tri with one and road with another).
Try to find another place locally that will be able to fit you on a fit cycle but also help you on the triathlon setup and any future bike needs.
First of all Mike, there is no such thing as a Guru fit. Your fit is done by the fitter, not the tool they use. And it sounds like you should give this one a miss, unless you just want a road fit. But there is no way you can transfer any of those coordinates from road to the Tri fit, completely different. To start with you will most likely need different length cranks on each bike, so everything after that is not comparable.
The fit you are getting is a “insert name of fitter here” fit. That is what you need to pay attention to.

yeah, this is important. i don’t want to fart around with fitting on my old bike (with a 1" steerer and old-diameter handlebars). shifting the cockpit around would be basically impossible. fit bike feels like the best way forward: what i want from this is coordinates for a future bike, not an ideal fit on my current one.
i’ve just discovered that the fitter i was interested in working with at the guru shop has left town, so i’ll have to do a bit more research. . .
