Group Rides Near Costa Mesa, California?

Just moved to Costa Mesa, California and am getting back into cycling after living in NYC for a few years. Can anyone please recommend a good weekend group ride from a nearby bike shop? Willing to drive to neighboring cities (Newport Beach, Irvine, etc.).

Looking forward to getting dropped again! Thanks!

I’ll ask the folks at work. I work for Hoag Hospital, and we have some dedicated cyclists | triathletes.

See also: Hospital - we work a lot and don’t get out much. We had a good group meeting Wednesday after work for either Newport Coast (hills) or the River Trail (flat) during 2020 so we didn’t lose our minds during the pandemic but fell off the radar eventually…

Canyon Velo is probably the best for shop rides. https://canyonvelo.org/index.php/weekly-rides/

Other local “legacy rides” would be:

Coffee Crew, Tues/Thursday 6:10am, corner of Campus and University (next to UCI)
Bus Stop, Friday, 6:35 am, PCH and MacArthur in Newport Beach(behind the Peets)
Queen Mary, Saturday, 7 or 7:10, can’t recall, same as Bus Stop
Canyon Velo, Saturday (see link)
Food Park, Saturday 8:45, Harvard and Main (Irvine), kind of dead but some folks still show up
Como, Sunday, 8am, Tustin Marketplace Starbucks

Thanks for all of the suggestions - really appreciate it!

Thank you, Stafford!

My coworker suggested to look on Facebook for:

OC Velo
Tribe
Lighting Velo
Adobo Velo

Are the ones he’s most familiar with…

Wait whuuuut?
I work for Hoag too, how do I meet our dedicated cyclists and triathletes?!

You need to get in touch with Gerard Villaneuva, he had Hoag cycling jerseys made…

FYI, my wife works at Hoag, too. Small world…

Weekend only?
Above is a list of the bigger long time rides.
There are also a lot of evening and morning rides.
Also depends upon how fast you want to be going.
A fast morning ride is the Tuesday Morning World Championships. Starts in Mission Viejo?
A fast evening ride is Marketplace in San Clemente.
Newport Coast Triathlon Club also has some rides.
There are a lot of Facebook organized rides as well. Usually not as fast as others. More B/C pace.
In Irvine there is Monday Night Social and Tuesday Night Ride.
Wednesday has a hill climb ride in Laguna Niguel that is formatted to suit most A to B- type riders.
There are many others, not so many shop organized.
Bicycle Club Irvine (BCI) and OC Wheelman (OCW) have many rides per week.

Good luck finding some that suit you.

(PS I also worked at Hoag for a summer as an EMT back in 1986)

Wow, that’s a lot of rides!

I tend to like to ride on early weekend mornings to avoid traffic. Plus, it fits my schedule better.

How hilly are the typical group rides in the area?

Thanks!
