Why does Greg Lemond hate America?
Do you mean North America or South America? Doh!
Read the story.
I agree with the first post, an excellent read! Thanks!
That is a good read. Bicycling isn’t exactly on my must-read list, so thanks for posting it.
Anyone who dares to question Lance hates America, great story though. His is the only TRUE great American cycling comeback.
Not bad, but it’s more about the self-absorbed author than Greg.
So…getting shot and racing with pellets in your heart dont count?
Good article about a great rider. I enjoyed it. Thanks for posting.
Super-depressing read about the writer and his train wreck of mistakes in life.
Seriously, who in their right mind betrays their wife for a 20 year-old, over-weight smoker who isn’t interested in cycling…I mean c’mon.
you should take a look at the same author’s book, heft on wheels.
it is a memoir, but it is a stunning story and some real literature. the man knows how to write.
Not bad, but it’s more about the self-absorbed author than Greg.
x2 on that.
I suggest that anyone that has not watched the 1989 TDF DVD go out and get it. The final 8 seconds gets all the press, but it was the rest of that tour that is really remarkable. Lemond and Fignon going at it everyday causing each other to crack. It’s a classic. Way more insight into Lemond than these retrospective articles.
x3 on the author being self-absorbed. Weird article.
Gred Lemond came to my LBS a few years ago and I had a chance to see him speak. I don’t get what the author is talking about. Maybe he’s different one on one, but in the 60 minutes that I heard him speak, it was pretty clear that Greg was and is still pretty bitter about everything. He’s just a classic guy who thinks the world is out to get him, and never bothers to see if the problems he’s having might come from within.
Seriously, who in their right mind betrays their wife for a 20 year-old, over-weight smoker who isn’t interested in cycling…I mean c’mon.
you’re kidding, right? because essentially the same question could be phrased, “who in their right mind makes any decision in life that betrays logic and causes suffering down the road?”
nearly everyone …
Calling Floyd a mule made me laugh.
“who in their right mind betrays their wife for a 20 year-old, over-weight smoker who isn’t interested in cycling…”
That’s what you’d think, but I’ve seen some guys so some really goofball things once they hit that mid life crisis. I knew a middle aged guy who deserted his wife and kids for a 23 yr old exotic dancer he met in a strip bar. And no, they didn’t end up living happily ever after. Kinda sad.
I'm sure Greg will enjoy the accompanying Carmichael/Lance ads on every page.
I still think he’s really a solid guy. Tons happened out of his hands and anyone would be bitter when dealing with great things lost.
I had a letter from Greg. When I was just starting out in cycling I had a LeMond frame, Shimano 105 components. I got a standard “thanks” postcard from LeMond Cycles in the mail as my LBS sent in my registration info.
However, Greg learned it was one of the ones with the new “carbon fork” - rare in those days - so he sent a letter personally.
Here’s the crap: 2003 my apartment is robbed, everything stolen including a box of old letters (w/ Greg’s inside along w/ old love letters from old girlfriends - what’s that say, Freud?) AND my handle of Jack Daniels, so I couldn’t even really cope with it all appropriately…
Thanks for pointing out this story. It’s a great read!
X4!!!
Total crap. The article is more about the author and his road to complete and utter destruction than LeMond. That being said. LeMond WAS and icon. He was an innovator and had one of the greatest come from behind wins ever. But, he was always a crying about something. Crying about not winning the 85 tour when he should have been working for Hinault who had the Yellow jersey. Crying about Hinault not keeping his promise (surprise, surprise!). Crying that he gained too much weight from cross countru skiing. Crying about how everyone was on dope except him.
Remember in 89 LeMond barely finished races near the front group and finished hours down in the Giro. Then all the sudden Otto Jacome gave him a shot of “iron” and boom he wins the tour without a real team. hmmmm…
Also LeMond was Lance’s biggest cheerleader until it became obvious that he was going to win three and push his name out of the spotlight. LeMond has simply become the fat old man at the end of the street who yells at kids to get off his lawn. Sad very sad.
Not bad, but it’s more about the self-absorbed author than Greg.
That is an obvious point. It is not meant to be about Greg. The author just uses him as a milepost that he uses to measure his own life against. Hate to break the news to some of you guys, but there are some of us who have lived lives which have been far more complicated, unpredictable and illogical than T1.
