Aloha All,
Michelle and I are staying in a nice little beach bungalow just a few miles outside of the Woodstock of surfing; Haliewa, HI. This is great since we usually spend our weekends just outside Woodstock, NY. We just moved up here from the Ko’Olina resort on the west side of the island, which was beautiful. We did the Firecracker Sprint race at Barber’s Point on sunday and had a great time. The race had a 500 meter swim and don’t laugh, it was the toughest 11 minutes of my fourteen year triathlon life. The surf was crashing and the undertow was pulling. The swim out into the ocean went way fast with the waves crashing over me, but man, the swim back in was something else; I thought it would be the easy part, but I was pulling for all I was worth. The bike and run through Barber’s Point Coast Guard Base was flat and not so fast for me on my still jet lagged legs but finally I got to the finish. Michelle started in the second wave, but in the results she finished about 40 seconds ahead of me. We were 46th and 47th overall with her first in her age group and me second. We had a great day!
So now we are up here and the water is just spectacular. I’ve never been here in summer and never seen it so clear. We are swimming and biking o running and swimming every day getting ready for the Wiamea Bay 1.2 mile swim race on saturday. These are my first swim races without my wetsuit security blanket but I’m feeling good. I’ll try to post some pictures and let you know how the swim goes when I get home.
Mahalo for now, Sweeney
