Anyone had any experience with these wheels? I’ve never seen anyone comment on them.
I have owned three of the wheels - a disc (the spider web?), the 5 spoke (interchangeable front and rear) and a 38mm front.
I sold them off over the last half year after limited use.
To be honest, the moulded wheels (disc, 5 spoke) had a lot of side to side/up and down in their roll. They were ‘within company tolerances’ meaning that they thought they were good enough, and to be fair, a friend’s HED 3C rear is about as good as the gravity zero product that i had in this respect.
The whole x-one hub design is interesting. I didn’t notice much difference, as they only work when you stop pedaling for that instant of hesitation in a standard hub design. maybe they would be better in MTB, but in tri, where you just keep pedalling, the improvement is relatively minor.
The weights listed on the web are not accurate - not even within 10% + or -.
I won’t be buying them again. They are equivalently priced to many other products, and they are a small company so I guess they deserve some support, but for me I didn’t think they were good enough. I certainly spent some good money on them, and raced well on them, but my results weren’t due to the wheels.
Thanks for the feedback. What about the 38 mm ? were you dissatisfied with that as well?
the 38mm was fine, if unremarkable. it was true and round and rolled ok. the depth meant it was never goign to be a rocket ship.
i think the deep dish carbon rims are basically being pumped out of china or taiwan (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
i used it twice on the front in windy races - kona - and it was ok.
as i said though, i think there are better wheels out there - hence i sold mine off on ebay.
If you look at the photos from Kona, this is the rear wheel Macca used. His Shimano got a flat and tech support threw the gravity aero wheel on there.
Bob
I heard he wanted the wheel on there and pretended he had a flat so as not to upset the sponsors. Which may make sense as why would support have a gravity zero wheel ?
I use Gravity Zero wheels and have found them fantastic. I have a disc on the rear and a 38mm front, and my wife has a 38mm front and rear.
As for the X-one hub, most riders will have a slack spot in their pedal stroke. So the hub makes a small difference on every pedal revolution. The worse your pedal technique - the more advantage you get.
A friend of mine who has a Zipp disc, trialled the Gravity Zero Rocket disc - and thought the Gravity Zero wheel was definitely better.
Note: Although I’m from Australia, I’m obviously not the Macca who won Kona
I didn’t hear that, but I suspected it. The shimano rear wheel isn’t quite deep enough to be paired up against the like of the zipp 1080 that Normann was riding.
