I’m at a loss to figure out what this pain is in my hamstring.
In the summer I had soreness while running intervals (more like a tightness). It progressed and finally in September I went to see a chiropractor.
He did lots of work directly to the hamstring including many sessions of Graston. I know bruising is normal, but even he commented on the extent of it.
Eventually we concluded that the Graston was doing nothing. Next was two sessions with electrodes on the hamstring. Not sure what this was called but it felt hot and prickly.
After all this I almost felt like my situation was worse than when I first went in. Now the hamstring felt sore when I was lying in bed vs before when it might not surface until an hour on the bike (was swimming, but not running due to PF on other side).
I would describe the feeling as hot vs pain.
Eventually I took a month off all activity. Still no improvement.
My question is, could this new pain/discomfort be damage to nerves on the surface of the skin?
I just want to figure this out as I’m dying to get back at it.
I won’t be going back to that chiro and will be trying to get into a sports MD, but that may take a couple weeks.
Hmm,
can you or chiro reproduce the pain by pushing on the hamstring muscle itself?
if not then it could actually be something else. I was misdiagnosed for over 2 months when i had high hamstring pain: was told things like sacroilitis, high hamstring strain, buttock strain, and piriformis syndrome. I do believe i had some piriformis syndrome (basically muscle tightness/inflammation tugs on sciatic nerve=pain in back of leg). I had graston which did help the piriformis relax. however in my case it was all due to my hip–cartilage tear in my socket and my surgeon (had surgery yesterday) told me has has seen and verified in labs testing that especially in runners the posterior muscles in the leg are trying to keep the hip joint from further injury–so even though the injury is elsewhere, a common complaint is hamstring or glute pain.
google piriformis stretch and see if that causes any of your symptoms if you do it.
not saying you have an injured hip, but you might have something besides just a simple muscle pull. they also checked my lumbar spine for a herniated disc etc but i assume your chiro did that sort of thing
yep, graston hurts and causes bruising. i don’y think you should do it on an acutely injured muscle, but it sounds like yours is more chronic. My guy did it as i put my leg though a nearly full range of motion–really did help with the sciatic pain i had once the piriformis relaxed I have had numerous calf and hamstring pulls over the years==in each case i could easily use my hand or a tennis ball to localize exactly where it was.
I had Graston for an Achilles injury right at this time last year. I had PT from someone who specialized in treating athletes, and triathletes in particular. I did have bruising, but I was back to running within two weeks. I’d recommend going to a sports doctor, then finding a PT that has experience working with athletes - a regular chiropractor won’t cut it.
