Grand Haven Triathlon

I’m flying home from Michigan tonight (stuck in Beautiful Cleveland airport - Hi Jodi - love your hometown airport) after meeting with the local race organization for the Grand Haven Triathlon.

I’m was very impressed with the course (sprint and oly this year) for the race. Swim is just like Steelhead and Firecracker in Lake Michigan - bike course is a very nice ride south along the lake - and the run course is fantastic along the river.

Side note - the bike course director i(Todd) s doing Lake Placid this year and is coached by Paul Huddle - I told Huddle to make sure his athlete understands how much WORK he will be doing on the bike course as he “tapers” for LP. It’s great to have triathletes as race coordinators at races - they know what athletes expect on the course.

If your looking for a great family beach vacation weekend in Michigan -put this race on your schedule - July 13th.

If fact - make it a weeks vacation on the beaches of west Michigan - do Firecracker in St Joe on July 6th and then spend the week on the beach as you make your way up the road to Grand Haven the this race on the 13th.

I second that. I grew up in this town and it really nice in the warmer months. Lots of outdoors stuff to do.

The City of Grand Haven is showing the love for the Grand Haven Triathlon. They have been laying fresh blacktop on much of the city streets the bike course runs on. They are also “cutting and patching” other sections of the streets as needed. This will prove to be a much smoother bike ride for the entire course. Also, the “first phase” (or early bird) pricing has been extended to June 23, 2008. All the agencies involved (City PD, Street and Parks Dept., Sheriff, Coast Guard, State Park, YMCA, Hospital EMS, more volunteers, etc.) are stepping up even more this year. This combined with Tom Z as R.D., will be a great event.
