A triathlon newbie here so please give me a break if i say anything stupid!
I am training for an Olympic distance at the end of autumn and am trying desperately to get my life in order (training, kit, nutrition etc!)
I have just started looking at GPS watches and am utterly confused. The Garmin 910XT seems to be the stand out winner when it comes to features as it seems to do everything a triathlete could ever need (correct me if I am wrong). After just having spent $1400 on a bike I dont really want to spend another half thousand on the forerunner 910 so have been looking around for alternatives. The new TomTom gps watch looks quite cool and the website says that it also does pool swimming. A few reviews say that is isn’t meant for open water swimming though so should I avoid it?
Go to dcrainmaker. He posts reviews of all of these. If you’re just starting out why go for the 910? The 310 would be much less and probably meet all your needs. I wouldn’t want to wear my 910 for the swim portion of a race anyway. You should ask yourself what you need from a watch. Does it need to do swim metrics? Or do you just want something for biking and running?
So, as newb, I would get a Garmin 310XT with a heart rate strap. Doesn’t have the swimming functionality of the 910, but has everything else, and you can get it for around $200 or so. I’ve had one for years and see no need to “upgrade” to the 910.
Yes, Polar is a great brand. They have different kinds of durable GPS watches. You can choose GPS watches according to your requirements. Since I started hiking I use Polar products.
