Has anyone had any experience with GPS Tracking Chips? I am trying to find something that will allow my wife to see where I am on training runs/rides and allow friends and family to track my progress during events. If something like this is an option, what do I need to carry with me and what do family and friends need to track me?
There are a lot of apps for phones that do that. There was a thread on DCrainmakers site recently on them. I use Glympse because who ever you want to see your track doesn’t need to have the app on their phone.
Endomondo Pro on Android, or maybe it’s on iPhone too. Turn it on, phone in ziploc bag in back jersey pocket.
This is what I do. It works really good. My wife even called me one time because I stopped to take a break and she thought I had crashed because I quit moving for a while!
X2 on Spot Tracker.
My wife monitors my kayak trips and backcountry hiking using her laptop or IPad.
Very inexpensive to purchase and buy annual service.
I’ve been waiting for the Myathletelive to sell a unit for a long time. Last over a year ago now they said they would have something out “in a month or so”. I’m curious in this now…http://www.pettracker.com Anyone have any experience in this? Relative low cost and monthly service fee and long battery life.

I use a simple freebie called Phone Tracker, but I’m going to try out Glympse; looks like it might work a little better. The phone apps work great for bike rides, since I have my phone with me anyway. I don’t like to carry the iphone when running, so the specialized tracking devices like Spot, PetTracker, and the GMU-10 could be interesting for that; but at this point I’m just not willing to part with that much cash…

Glympse is requesting some scary permissions on my phone. I’m not a member of the tin foil hat club, but they concern even me. Anyone else notice this and have any idea why these permissions are required (Read SMS, control phone, read phones ID and phone number, etc?
I use a Garmin GTU-10 - it works great but you need cell coverage for it to work and it only works for the country you buy it for.
I would agree here. If you don’t need/care about ANT+ data integration (i.e. transmitting HR data along with it), then the GTU10 is sorta hard to beat from a triathlon durability standpoint. Battery wise you can go weeks on it, or at a high-refresh rate for race day easily.
It’s waterproof so you can put it in your trisuit pocket without issue.
The Spot Connect/Standalong isn’t bad either - and I use that too. The only change is it’s much bigger. And it updates far less frequently than the GTU10 does.
Many thanks to all who took the time to respond to my question about a personal tracker. The consensus appears to be either the Garmin GNU-10 or the Spot. The one good thing about the Spot is the SOS and Help features, but when I read some reviews posted on Amazon, 2 things concerned me. One was product durability/reliability and customer support. Those that didn’t like the Spot came down really hard on how long a user could expect the product to last and the poor (not our problem attitude) customer support when there was a product problem. The other issue was potential interference with other GPS devices, which I assume means things like a sport watch such as a 310XT for example or a wireless bike computer. For those of you who have used the SPOT have you encountered any problems with the durability/reliability and/or interference with other GPS based products? Thanks for your input.

I didn’t get those types of permission requests on my iphone; just the normal “use my location” and “push notification”. I am really liking Glympse except for one big hole that I really wish they would fix; which is that it needs an ability to specify a GPS signal interval. Continuous tracking isn’t necessary for what I’m doing, and it is eating up my iphone battery big time. Maybe I’ll break down and get that Garmin tracker sometime soon.
