I’m getting a Garmin eTrex Vista C for Christmas to do some MTB exploring and hiking and have heard mixed reviews on topo software. Any comments on which one is best? Magellan, Garmin, DeLorme, others?
Thanks

I would prefer one that was pretty good with fire roads, hiking trails/biking trails as possible. So I guess route details is first and foremost.
Most of the topo software I have seen uses the same usgs topo dataset which is decent for trails (but not too recent in some cases). You might look for something that has supplemental satellite and/or arial photos if you are doing a lot of trail stuff. Then you can zoom in and see the trail if it isn’t on the topo. Here are a couple that I have used, and some considerations. MotionBased.com (great for also tracking your biometric data) Topofusion.com (free demo version, satellite photos and topo, 3d photo rendering) Delorme (uses their own data, better for roads more than trails imo, doesn’t use web-based data if you have limited connectivity)
