Want to make a cool GoPro race video at the Sandpiper Bay 2575. It is a sprint race. I am racing with several friends. Any suggestions on how to make a short 1.5-2 min vid that would show the race but at the same time not be boring?
what I don’t want is just a video strapped to either my bike or my chest for the full race, that would be boring. since i have only one camera that would require handing it off to my friends between the race which also means we would have to race similar pace…
Use the “Dashware” software program to overlay speed, distance, cadence, power, heart rate, and a map onto the video. http://www.dashware.net/
If you have two cameras, mount 1 on the front, and one on the rear. Show the front video as the main video and overlay the rear view as a smaller screen somewhere on the upper corner.
There are a ton of videos on youtube if you search for “Cycling Dashware.”
I think these result in the most entertaining types of cycling videos. Some people even overlay text comments during videos to tell more of a story.
Will you or any of your friends know someone who will be a spectator at the race, or can you bring one? If so, see if they can shoot some footage for you using a second videocamera–preferably not a GoPro. Just about every digital camera on the market has video capabilities, as do many smartphones and tablets. (You’d be amazed what a small Canon Powershot can do.)
To give yourself the best chances of getting useable footage, the camera operator needs to be told: (1) No quick panning (panning–especially handheld–has to be done slowly!); and (2) Do NOT zoom in (use wide-angle shots), or the footage will be too shaky. When it comes to editing, there’s almost nothing worse than having a lot of footage that’s completely unuseable because it’s too jerky or shaky.
