Good to Great...Gees... Joanne Ernst is THAT Jim Collin's wife

All this tripping down memory lane in Monty’s post got me thinking about the “old” stars of the sport. It didn’t dawn on me till today that the 1985 IMH womens champ…wait, wasn’t she married to a guy named Jim Collins…and didn’t a Jim Collins write the big books on business leadership…and in “Good to Great” didn’t he reference Dave Scott rinsing his cottage cheese? And aha! Did a little Google-ing and it looks like the two Jim Collins’ are one in the same and they have been married for 20-some years.

Whatever happened to Ray Browning? He was an excellent triathlete, but what made him stand out in my mind was the fact that he got into a lot of off the wall races like winter biathlons and such.

Yes Joanne Ernst is the wife of Jim Collins who wrote “Good to Great”. He also wrote “Built to Last”.

Hmmm…which IM voice are you? Reilly?

Yeah, what a trip! The 1983 USTS results that Monty posted showed Anne McDonnell winning the Austin race. It took me a few seconds to remember that Annie Hed’s maiden name was McDonnell!

Mike…is that you???

Yes it is me. Happy Holiday.

I believe that Ray Browning still lives and works in Boulder. Perhaps the Boulder STers can fill us in. He was an excellent XC ski stud.

There is a good CU commencement speech where Jim Collins references his wife and her IMH win:

You are right, Anne was one of the first early women pros in the sport. In fact she was the inspiration for Steve’s genius, and all the inventions he has brought to this sport. Everything he did in those days was to help her go faster, and later on, the stuff would make it into the mainstream. After they were married, she would run the business, and he would just keep tinkering and inventing. They were a perfect match, and remain two of the nicest, loyal, people you’d ever want to meet…

Ray Browning is, indeed, still around Boulder working on his Ph.D in the Integrative Physiology department at CU. Every so often the Boulder Daily Camera runs a training story written by him. The book he co-authored “Serious Training for Endurance Athletes” is a classic. Plus, Ray was not only a great XC Skier (he won the 1993 World Winter Triathlon Championship); but, also, has 7 Ironman victories to his credit.

So true…
