I run in the UA shorts with the speed pocket built in. Granted your phone is a little larger than my samsung S7, but I think it will work. I love the speed pocket, the phone is carried center waist and I don’t have any off the jostling around that some of my other shorts have.
I’ve been using this belt for about a year now with no issue. I can fit my iphone X, key fob, and a couple gels or bars for longer runs. I like that it’s adjustable.
If it is purely for safety reasons - being able to call for help - then is it worthwhile buying a cheap flip-phone on a pay-per-use plan ?
smaller, maybe lighter, easier to carry, less expensive to replace if you happen to: fall on it or lose it, or if it gets drenched in rain/sweat/electrolytes.
And you have a back-up for when your I-phone dies ![]()
I go “on call†for work with 1 week on/2 weeks off. I just have to be able to dial into a conference call if needed. I’ve found the simplest solution is to just put the cell phone in a zip log bag and carry
Spibelt. I have a note 9. Same size as the iPhone plus. I can’t tell it’s even there.
Things bouncing around on a run can be annoying, as could be carrying anything more than necessary.
However, I don’t know why more people don’t run in bike jerseys with tight rear pockets and/or a rear zip pocket.
I run with both a water belt/pouch and bike jersey. The pouch on front holds my phone. If I’m not in the mood for gels in the run belt…Cliff bar into the bike jersey pocket. Cliff bars don’t fit in the elastic gel holders.
If it may get dark before I’m done, but don’t want to wear the light on my head the entire time…into the jersey pocket. Same for clothes. Generally they are light enough material I can fold it Kondo style and toss it in a bike jersey pocket.
I’m primarily a cyclist, but will run sometimes. It’s a habit of liking the bike jersey.
Speaking of jersey pockets …
Some years ago–never mind how long precisely-- D’Wife and I were on our annual bike tour for MS. D’Wife is not very good at working her jersey pockets, so it is usually my job to schelp the snacks around for the both of us. This entails stocking up pretty well at the rest stops along the way, and stuffing my pockets more than they were probably meant to carry: snack bars, cookies, chips, pretzels, Tastykakes … you get the idea
At some point on the road, she asked me to hand a protein bar or something over to her. I sat up, reached back, fumbled around until I found what she wanted and handed it over.
Some dude riding up behind me said “Looks like you got a whole Wawa back there”
Some dude riding up behind me said “Looks like you got a whole Wawa back there”
Funny you mention that.
On long solo rides I don’t like depending on outside hydration sources and also really don’t like stopping for very long. I’ve been on group rides stopping at gas stations for more hydration, what if it was closed?
So, sometimes I literally look like a domestique with two extra bottles in my jersey pockets. I think I’ll finally get smart though and buy a couple more Specialized rib cages for the road bike and go “triathlete style” with the BTS mount instead. I find those rib cages don’t eject bottles. At least they don’t on the BTS on the TT bike
I do a bottle an hour for a tempo/SS ride of a few hours. So, 4 hours equals 4 bottles. Over 4 hours? I’ll probably plan a loop back to the house to refill or a cafe’ stop and carry my powder mix with me.
I use my salomon vest. it holds everything snug so your phone doesnt jiggle around. Also works great for the long runs when you are carrying food/hydration.
I tried different arm bands/belts over the years, but I felt like the vest was life changing.
I have a Tune Belt arm band, it’s just fine for taking my i8+ with me while running.
I got the version w/ the extender belt, but it turns out my pythons aren’t quite that large, so the standard one it’s built with works just fine for me.
Had an older, smaller version for my 6+, that I used for several years.
One trick you can do, is, if you like to take photos regularly w/ your phone while running, you can cut out a ‘window’ in the back where the camera lenses are located.
That way, you don’t have to remove the phone from the case to snap pics.
Hard to beat for $17 delivered from AMZN.
I don’t like carrying too much on my waist, so I prefer an arm band. I have been using the Tune Belt for many years. They have different sizes to fit a variety of phones and cases. Durability has been great; I typically get several years (hundreds of runs) before needing to replace the band.
Only downside I have found is that if I take the phone out, I usually need to take off the band to put the phone back in. But I usually am not pulling out the phone on my runs, so not that big of an issue.
Another vote for the SPI belt, with the addition of two safety pins for numbers, it’s also my race belt that can handle a few gels.
I’m a fan of Amphipod products.I’ve tried probably a half dozen waist belts and it’s the only one that doesn’t ride up and drive me batshit crazy on long runs
.
In a lot of ways I’m addicted to the UA Speedpocket shorts.
Fitletic Running Belt - Ultimate II
I found that I had to tighten SPI belts to an uncomfortable level, especially with an old + version of an iPhone. The fitletic is way overbuilt but comfy and holds even large phones easily. Also…thick strap.
I have a 7+ in a case and it fits nicely in the pocket of my DeSoto Tuesday Run Shorts. It bounces a little, but it hasn’t bothered me at all. Never fallen out.
I asked a similar question on here a few months back and, based on the suggestions, went with a Spibelt for my Iphone XR as I didn’t want an armband. The phone is heavy with an Otterbox and it bounces only a very little in the Spibelt.
After hearing about it from Jesse Thomas on Instagram, I’ve been using the Naked Running Band. It’s great for carrying your phone, nutrition, and even some hydration and, best of all, there’s no bouncing. The sizing is according to your waist measurement, so the belt can get a bit snug if/when you gain a few pounds in the off season, but other than that, it’s great.
I have an orange mud vest but have only used that for gravel biking but obviously it could work in this situation. I’ll need to try as I was thinking I would get annoyed with it on my back. I also have a flip belt but it’s either stretched or I’ve lost weight. And it’s a pain to get the phone in and out.
for my triathlon bike, for extra long rides, I have a bta, bottle on the downtown, and 2 behind saddle. that’s really rare though for me to load up like that. normally I just do a loop route of some sorts.
