Good headphones for ipod? (or other MP3s)

I want some that sound good and will stay in my ears while running. I’ve had mixed results with the standard ipod headphones.

These are not bad - attach to your iPod earphones.

I got the shure ones that are sold on the Apple site. They don’t move from your ears as they are the type that are used by the concert performers and sit in the ear acting as a sound suppressor too.

more than you will ever want to know about headphones

also look at etymotics…they are one of the premier makers of in the ear phones (www.headphone.com)
.

I love my Sony MDR-EX71s. They come in white to match most iPods and sound really good. They’re the “in the ear” type so they’re small and easy to travel with. I haven’t had any issues when working out as they come with different size earbuds to fit about any ear. They’re around $40. Here’s a link:

Any Sennheiser set.

They’re not that cheap but excellent sound quality and stays in my ear.

Try these with athletic tape… (just as Lance & I use across the earlobe)

Absolutely go with the best - SURE. They are very expensive, but sound perfect. Same thing your favorite rock star has in his/her ear during a show. I have a set of EC-3 (I think the model is correct) with some custom ear molds. The “cheaper” ones are about $100, but step up to the $300 ones for a dual driver set up. I couldn’t hear much diff with the 5s (have a little crossover built in to separate frequencies for the dual drivers).

The etymotic ones are very nice sounding too (about $150), but bounce around a little while running. The Sures completely seal in the ear and you can hear absolutely nothing but music and good bass response.

I also have tried the Sony ones mentioned above and they are very nice for the price (about $60 I think).

Splurge on the SURE - you won’t be disappointed.

I love my EC3’s with my Pod, but I don’t use them running anymore. One of the phones blew a month ago after 4 weeks of running and I am fairly certain it’s because for me they tend to get pretty wet with sweat on fast or long runs due to their in ear design. They were replaced no question but now I just wear them around the house.

These are brand new and should be pretty good.

They’re based on the Future Sonics EM3 earphones - which I have and sound excellent. I think they sound better than more expensive Shure or Etymotic products. The EM3s would not be good for running though, because they have spongy ear plugs that would soak up sweat.

You’ve got to decide whether you want isolation earphones, or not. The bad thing about isolation earphones for running is that you can’t hear traffic, and you’ll be able to hear the cord bouncing around. But isolation earphones generally sound better and have better bass response.

You are 100% correct. Sound isolation phones (like the SUREs and etymotic) get better base response. The SUREs do NOT give the annoying “cord rub” sound when running though when properly routed behind the ear, while the etymotics do. This was my MAIN reason for going with them as I actually liked the sound of the etymotics just a little better. You do need to be careful running with them though as you can not hear ANYTHING when these are in your ears (great on airplanes though!), not even your breathing or footsteps.

Sorry to rehash an old post, but I just picked up a Nano and I’m looking for a good pair of earphones I can run with. The stock ones are too bulky and hurt my ears after wearing them for a short time. I tried the Nike Vapor Flights because they say they’re sweat-proof, but they don’t fit me very well and I don’t think they sound very good either. I’m a bit reluctant to run with a $150 - $200 pair of Sure earphones, and I’m also not crazy about noise-cancelling for running (for safety). Anyone have any other recommendations for a good small in-ear design like the Sure’s that’s tolerant of lots of sweat and doesn’t have noise cancelling? The guy in the Apple store told me that if the stock earphones didn’t fit me very well I’d have the same problem with the Sony EX71SL’s. Comments? Thanks.

I would try the Sony EX71 then. They sound pretty good and are pretty comfy and not too expensive. They still “seal” pretty good though, so hard to hear. Most of the in ear bud type hurt my ears too (even after just 30 mins). My ear was killing me after a 3 hour run. The Sures are perfectly comfy even for 3 hours so …

YMMV.

I can’t wear my shures for 3 hours - too painful! Though great for 1-2 hours.

For running I use a cheap pair of over the ear headphones that sit comfortably. when they die of sweat it’s no pain to replace them.
