Jacqueline Sherman
Millionaire Evacuee
After a lucky day at the slots, one hurricane evacuee won’t be standing in line for disaster assistance.
A New Orleans evacuee has become an instant millionaire.
Jacquelyn Sherman, who has been staying with her family in Opelousas, tried her luck at the Evangeline Downs Casino and hit the jackpot.
Meet Jacqueline Sherman, one of many evacuees who was forced to leave the Crescent City to escape Katrina’s wrath.
Since then, Sherman and 25 others have been staying at her sister’s house in Opelousas.
Sherman says they made good friends with the floor and sleep on air mattresses.
While running errands on Tuesday, she made a stop that would change her life.
Sherman says on their way to Wal-Mart, she asked her sister to stop for a while at the casino for a bit and her sister said okay.
Sherman says she didn’t even realize she had won until moments later.
Sherman won $1.6 million. Though she hasn’t had time to think about what she’ll do with the money, she does have an idea where she’ll start.
She says her biggest concern is replacing a house and getting back to a normal lifestyle.
When Sherman returned to her Mid-City home, she says it was hard to hold back the tears. She lost everything. Today, Sherman wears a million dollar smile.
Sherman says she hasn’t decided whether she’ll move back to her New Orleans neighborhood. But, she does plan on living somewhere in the metropolitan area.
