i’m looking at potential colleges and would like to go to one with good triathlon and cycling programs, but it must also be a good academic school also. do you guys know of any?
Princeton had an okay team when I was there. Tyler Wren, who now rides for Colavita, won the individual Div. II overall title twice while he was there. Not sure if there is Div. I cycling, as all our other sports were D1, but cycling was D2. MIT has a good team as well, and they have access to their very own windtunnel, which is pretty cool. Other than those two, I think the big teams are all the schools you’d expect – Colorado, Texas, etc.
check out denison, we have a great school and a good group of traithletes as well.
University of New Hampshire
Cornell
Vassar.
Sorry newbz, he said a school with good academics. Try Kenyon.
Just kidding. (Kenyon '99 grad – stupid small Ohio college rivalry)
University of Colorado in Boulder has several national titles in both cycling and triathlon and some of their departments would be considered good to excellent quality (if you want a big research university). I sponsor their triathlon team and they are an exceptional bunch of athletes, but more importantly, good people.
pssshshhhhh kenyon, lol
.
Cal Berkley
Purdue (good engineering program)
.
Kenyon? Well, great swim team for sure!
I’ve seen loads of Purdue tri guys all over the place when I race. Decent Div I school
I’ll second Roof’s Purdue nomination. We have 3 Cat 2’s from there that are very strong.
“Cal Berkley”
that would just be Cal
.
Air Force Academy has a tri club team and a great engineering program…well, they have a great academic program all around, with a STRONG focus on engineering.
Oh yeah, it’s free (so if your parents were going to foot the bill…maybe they’ll buy you a really nice tri bike)
UC Santa Barbara is a great place for training, has great weather, and the girls are HOT
Haim
.
purdue and marian college. they have a velodrome across the street!
No question in my mind- Cal.
Nationally ranked for tri and cycling, often reigning champs (recently anyways) and rated the No. 1 public institution of higher learning in all the categories that count.
Long training and racing season, great competitive scene in the NorCal Nevada District (only one track though), world reknown triathlons within only an hours or so drive.
The only drawback is the lack of flat roads locally; if you road race in the Bay Area, you will have to conquer the art of climbing.
Check out Indiana University, especially for business school, medicine, biology and music. Then go out and rent the movie “Breaking Away.” I am pretty sure no other college ever had a movie about their spring cycling race (Little 500). Its a huge ending to a week-long party. I didn’t get into cycling until 10 years after college, so I missed out on that fun…well, I missed out on the racing part of the week anyway…
What do you want to study?
gotta put the plug out for uw madison. We’re ready to start kicking some butt this year for triathlon, and we have an awesome cycling team too. plus its a great school for just about any field.
Alright… I’m currently at Rutgers and have been racing in the ECCC for 3 years…
First, I’m not gonna shit talk any program publicly, but there are definately a few colleges out there that are WAY to into themselves…
I’d meet potental schools and see what you like…
Here are the BEST. The list is from result and personal interactions i’ve had with the teams.
-
UVM - by far the best cycling school with the most laid back down to earth kids… they rule the ECCC.
-
PENN State - THey have pros… coaches… and a solid cycling program.
-
Alot of schools with both pros and cons…: Dartmouth, UNH, BU, BC, Rutgers, Yale, Princeton, Drexel, UPENN
As for the US:
Cycling: FORT LEWIS is KING … UC Boulder is a close second…
Tri: UC San Diego…
If you have questions of want to meet any folks from a conference i can get you in touch… let me know… i’ll also be very honest about the expiriences i’ve had with any team out there.
You can come to The University of Tennessee Knoxville and help me make the team better. We need more experienced riders than the three that we have. Just a thought.
PM’d you.
