Good affordable base bar

I think I’m gonna be changing around my front end, from my Easton setup to a pair of vision clipons. Need a decent base bar to go with it. Aluminum is fine, but carbon would be OK if the price is right.

I’d prefer to have cables exit behind the bar close to the stem.

I ordered mine a momth ago and am using it on Cannondale slice rs frameset with pfdesign j5 brakets.
I think it is a massive inventory clearance sale…!

Sky’s the limit on what you could do/spend there.

I put a no-name chinese aerobar set on my P2 since I figured I’m past the days of aeroweenieness and it’s been surprisingly great. It’s not on Amazon anymore but there are other carbon aerobars on Amazon if you just search for them. Of course, buyer beware on those - if you get a dud, you probably have little recourse about it, and forget about warrantee issues. I literally went into it expecting that it was a gamble and that if it failed, I’d just buy something like this as originally planned:

Profile Design Ozero base bar, $50 for the older gen one, $160ish for the newer dropped height version

I will say up front that it took a lot of work for me to install it, as it requires recabling the whole bike, and reinstalling the brake and shifter levers. The levers are easy if all goes well but if you goof one of the expander plugs in the brake levers it can be a royal pain to redo it as they’re several pieces that fall apart really easily. I was also a noob, so I literally made every mistake in the book despite carefully studying all the videos. I even once routed my rear derailleur cable right through the loop of the bike chain, and only realized it on the first pedalstroke after it caught.

thanks guys!

I’ve built / torn down / rebuilt so many bikes over the years, I could do it in my sleep. Wanna stay away from no-name chinese carbon tho, if a bar breaks that’s not something I really care to experience, irregardless of warranty.

Hey that’s pretty impressive for someone who I thought was as close to a 100% pure swimmer as you can get for posting on a triathlon forum!

You def have way more bike wrenching skills than I do - kudos! (Wish I could say the same about my swimming vs yours LOLLLL)

Oh, I am now, but I’ve switched things up over the years. After my swim “career” was done after graduation, (and I use the tern “career” loosely) I switched to cycling (couldn’t climb well, but I could TT and sprint a little) with some tri’s interspersed in there.

I’m considering maybe, possibly, perhaps, getting back into tri’s for the 2018 season. If I can stay injury free and motivated.

I put the tri-bike on the trainer last night, haven’t ridden it in 2 or 3 years, and the position really doesn’t work for me anymore.

Deda have one that doesn’t cost too too much: http://www.dedaelementi.com/?product=tibar
You’ll have to see how much it can be had locally but it’s under €150.

Part of the issue is that my bike fit has changed when I swapped cranks from a double to a track crank (shorter arms, I already had the crank. That prompted me to remove the front derailleur (no point in that with a track crank) and that then prompted me to remove the front shifter. That shortened the reach, and now I want to swap things around.

plus I find the Easton extensions too narrow.

Wow, that is a great deal.

Re: the OP, I was going to recommend the Shimano PRO Missile alloy:

I’m in the midst of doing exactly this—well almost. I’m converting my road-bike into a serviceable tri-bike for my first season. Ebay is your friend. I spent less than $200 total on a complete PD/SRAM front-end, including shifters, levers, matching RD, and stem.

I just bought the first gen PD Ozero on ebay for $35. It doesn’t meet your criteria for a rear cable exit…but, there are quite a few other options on ebay for under 100 smackers (eg the above mentioned SVET @ $64, and others).

The Pro missile was the one I was looking at originally, but didn’t know if there were better options.

I’ll check out the eBay links when I get home.

Love my PRO missile alloy!

It looks like I can get the PRO missile allow for about $110 locally, and I won’t have to deal with shipping and duties from the states.

At least, the LBS is listing it as available on their site.

what aero bars are you using with it? Any issues with cable interference?

If you’re asking about aero extensions, I use Profile T2+ on mine currently. I plan on replacing them soon with a ski-bend extension (most likely USE Tula alloys) after using Profile ZBS clip-ons in my road bike for IM Wales last year and preferring the wrist/hand position.

I’ll add support for the PRO Missile Alloy. I just switched from Bontrager S-bend extensions to Zipp Evo 70 extensions which seem much more comfortable for me. I’ve been very happy with the base bar and it really checked all the boxes for me to give me a clean front end with good flexibility and all for an incredible value (IMO).

Dang - am I missing something or are those ebay prices really low for new parts?

Yeah, I was shocked at how low the two Profile bars (Ozero and Svet) are. They (and the alloy Felt Bayonet) were both on my list when I was shopping around to upgrade my stock bar, but they definitely weren’t that low. I think the lowest I ever saw the Ozero was around $100. I paid <$70 for the PRO Missile, I think.

Crazy good deal! I will probably upgrade my Zipp AL base to this.

I agree these are weirdly low. Not a knockoff? (Good reviews for the dealer, though!)

That base bar actually costs less than the no-name carbon chinese bar that I’m using! I almost surely would have bought the Profile Design carbon bar rather than the no-name bar if that deal was around when i was shopping for a bar. When I was aerobar shopping, I was horrified at how expensive cockpits were - it looked like $250 minimum for alloy/alu base+aerobar, and $350+ for carbon (most $500+ for the two pieces, actually.)

Im using the profile t4+ extensions that came with my p2 and they seem to work great for my fit! The only issue with the setup is its not that clean but I think that is more of a bike/internal cable routing issue than aerobar/basebar combo issue. I can add pics at some point if you would like.
