Going to San Diego, hook us up!

I´m going to spend about 7 weeks around San Digeo and would be wildly appreciative on any tips on training venues, sessions, pools, secret trails, quiet roads, nice girls, massage therapists, whole food stores, run friendly beaches and so forth. Basically everything that ever gave So Cal a reason to invent triathlon!

I´ve been there a few times but not for long enough time to get a good grip on the whole area…

We´re also looking for a place to stay as we only have location fixed until March 14!

I´ll be going with my brother who is a primal athlete who likes to run barefoot, lift anything heavy lying around and eating raw chicken. He´s also infamous for being JD California and having written the “sequal” to JD Salinger´s Catcher in the Rye.
Our common goal is to work out, write, do road trips, hang around and create our own Swedish mini-version of Entourage. We don´t have a good agent though…

I´m flying out on March 2nd, will get settled before going to Tucson for Gordo´s Endurance Corner Camp and then return for the remainder of my stay.

Fire away, I want any tips or suggestions to make training and staying in SD even better than the real thing!

Thanks
Jonas

Massage theropists,

Ask for Poalo.

Whole Foods is just down the street from them too.

Thanks!

Tjena Jonas,
you will find lots of info on San Diego in this forum - at least tri related stuff (not sure about the “nice girls” part - but I’m sure you will find the SoCal girls pretty friendly  ). For open water swimming the classic suggestion is La Jolla Cove. There are tons of rides to do here. For intense sessions in the aero position, try out Fiesta Island - or as I like to call it - the San Diego version of a bike trainer. For running I like Mission Bay Park since there are plenty of water fountains. Do a search on San Diego in the forum and lots of other stuff will show up. From a fellow Scandinavian I can tell you this place is pure paradise in the winter…

Karsten

I can give Jonas very high marks for being an entertaining camp companion. He will keep you laughing. Just don’t let him take you into the mountains or he will run off and leave you there.

I heard in the grapevine that Chris sold the business. (heard this from a friend that got an email from them)

As for my picks Erynne Hill from Rehab United but a close second with Rob Latimer

There is so much you can do here in SD, depends on what you want to do and where you are staying…

On the bike, suggest hooking up with a bike club for a Sat ride,
One of my favorite longer training rides is from PT Loma light house to the east end of San Luis Rey bike trail will be 80 plus miles, or hill repeats inside Torrey Pines,or hill repeats on Soladad , dont ride much in east county as drivers not as friendly but some major freaking climbs… Fiesta Island is a great place to put the hurt down… is a one way road that has a short loop and a long loop, they have TT races there every couple months( google Fiesta Island TT) … or bring your state issue ID and you can ride through Camp Pendleton up to San Clemente, couple nice hills , good TT bike course, and You gotta do Sleeping Indian up in Fallbrook, oh what fun…!

Runs… your brother would like Cowels Mtn trail run/hike, 6 miles round trip great training run or nearby Mission trails (get a trail map from the visitors center), both take water… Iron Mtn Rose Canyon Tecolote Canyon,(if warm there can be snakes… Mission trails has the biggest Rattle Snakes I’ve seen), not a fan of Mission Bay as alot of cement sidewalks , ALTHOUGH the 2 legged sites are pretty dang good , La Jolla Cove a good place to run for the sites too, watch the road/ sidewalk as alot of tourist and holes cracks, good run is from the cove to PB and back… 13 miles some water , bring your own… My Favorite is Carlsbad train station south down to Leucadia (South Puntos state beach… do the stairs behind the bathroom refill water at the bathroom head north) and back along the coast, 13 plus miles water available a few places, vey pretty run…

Hiking…I like my peak to peak in Cuyumaca State Park… Cuyumaca peak to Stonewall Peak back to the car (9 miles I think… at 4,000 plus feet,) down to Julian , grab an Julian apple pie maybe eat at the Julian Inn head home, plenty of trails off of Sunrise highway

Mtn Biking… Mission Trails… Daily Ranch (decent hills) Rose Canyon dont stop and look around or you might get a date … I dont do much mtn biking anymore … although Alpine has a epic trail dont rememebr then name

Find a female friend , Gaslamp or any spot around San Diego State ( La Jolla for happy hour),Del Mar is kinda poser wine drinkers, Carlsbad has alot of cougars out trolling ( West Bistro and Coyote Grill)

or if you are a rainbow guy Hillcrest just wear your tight fitting clothes.

I am not a fan of TJ … not my scene and a little sketchy … not sure how much of the under 21 crowd goes there anymore

Yeah it’s true, I got the same email. I will send Paolo a message on FB to verify if he is going to still be working at that location.

too much to do to list it all, but knowing your pedigree, you NEED to do the Wednesday ride out of Carlsbad up the coast through Camp Pendleton and the Saturday Swamis ride (long version).
Masters swimming, either the Encinitas Y or Carlsbad pool. Sunday morning is the Ranch run in Rancho Santa Fe. Killer trails, hills and plenty of speed. Tuesday nights is my interval run workout in Carlsbad that I coach and is open to anyone that wants to drop in. Email of PM me for more specific info and I’d be glad to help out.

Paolo said, they are still open for business, just changed the name and some internal things other than that it’s business as usual. =]
