Going to Maui - Where to Swim & Run?

Vacationing to Kaanapali next week. Any recommendations on places to Swim & Run? Not hauling a wetsuit on the plane.

You should be able to swim almost anywhere along the beach in that area. No wetsuit is necessary, the water is warm. You can run on the beach, the walkway along the beach, or along the shoulder of the main highway if you need to do something long, but there is lots of traffic there.

I was on Maui last summer in the Napili area, north of Kaanapali. I swam in Napili Bay and Kapalua Bay and ran on the roads in that area. There is somewhat less traffic due to the location, but if you run on the smaller roads you need to keep your eyes open because there isn’t much of a shoulder and the roads have many blind curves.

Have fun!

There is a FREE (YES FREE!) 50m swimming pool in every major town on Maui… if you want to do structured workouts. Kaanapali is not a real town… so you’ll have to go to Lahaina.

Wetsuit would be useless in Maui… as even the ocean is too warm. Ocean is great but ask about currents and such… it can be dangerous. Don’t swim alone… you get stung by a nasty jelly… you could be done for.

Running… Poli Poli state park is a hidden gem for trail running.

You could also run from Wailuku up the Iao Valley and back.

Maui wasn’t the best place to run. Awesome cycling though!

Lovely sea to swim in but ask the locals about currents, they can be very strong. I stayed just outside of Lahaina to the West and enjoyed morning runs along the beach and the edge of the golf courses. Enjoy your time there, it’s a beautiful island and one I will return to.

Hey Synchronicty,

Where’s the free pool in Wailai? Or the closest? How can i find where they are?

Thanks.

Check out the “Places to Swim” link on the US master’s swimming website (www.usms.org). Closest pool to Ka’anapali is in Lahaina–beautiful 50m pool (yes, and it’s free). Lap swim times are listed on the website (not sure if they’re current though). Several other beautiful 50m facilities on the island as well. And there’s always the Pacific ocean too.

Whereabout in Lahaina? I wish I knew that when I was staying there.

If I recall, south end of town, on the east side of the highway.

I hooked up with them 2 years ago and had a great time.

Thanks, I see there is a pool in Kihei. Sweet, i’ll be there in October.

Ciao!

Cheers, Synchro.
