Going to Amsterdam...need training ideas

So work is taking me to Amsterdam for 10 days, leaving this Sunday. I am staying in a corporate apartment so I will not have access to a hotel pool. I was wondering if anyone has ever been, knows some good running trails (up to a 10 - 15 mile run would be good), or knows a good local pool that i could access. I also am not going to be able to bring my bike, so wont be able to go for any rides while i am out there. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Todd

tons of great lap pools all over amsterdam. just ask for a map and ask around.

there is also a big city park in the center of town with good running loops, but nearly any area of the city has some bike/walking paths that wind out of town toward the outskirts. nearly all are great for running.

have fun.

Not sure where you are staying, in town, I would assume. Running is pretty easy. Holland has bike paths like you dream about. I ran on them everyday. Ask around how to get to them.

We also rented bikes at a place at the train station and rode to our office in Amselveen from downtown on the bike path system for extra fun.

Perfect. Thanks!

I was just there a couple months ago for work and did most of my running in and around Vondel Park. Hit mapmyrun.com and do a search for Amsterdam.

What was said about the various parks in Amsterdam is true, but it is a small place and you’ll find yourself doing a bunch of laps. It has been a good few years since I’ve been, but if you are looking for a long run, there are a couple of options. Assuming you are south of the Amstel in Amsterdam city center, you can head west - the road starts out as the Basisweg, turns into Westpoortweg, turns into something else. Google this area, and you’ll see there are lots of small parallel roads that get you off the bigger road, although you’ll pop back out onto it occasionally. Very industrial area, scenery not so great, but I remember this area as not having much traffic. If you can get across the river to the north, toward Edam, you’ll be in polders, the pastures and fields protected by dikes. Very scenic. My recollection is that south towards shithole airport is bad once you’re out of the city center.

Oh, and be really careful of the bike paths - quite a lot are bike only, and they get a lot of traffic. The fietsers (cyclists) definitely do NOT like to share with pedestrians and will let you know it. If you need to be on one to get from one area to another, run against traffic and step off into the grass well before any approaching fietser draws level with you.

Brian

So,
Let me get this straight…you are going to Amsterdam; and training is the first thing on your mind?
Does ‘High Times’ magazine have a forum?
Have a great trip, I have been 3 times, but unfortunately cant help at all

swim the canals.

sprint from coffee house to coffee house.

hmm, what kind of riding could you do in the red light district?

"you are going to Amsterdam; and training is the first thing on your mind? "

I was thinking the same thing. It’s been awhile since I was last there, but tri training wasn’t the first thing on my mind.

Try to get to the pool at Slotterbadpark - it’s stunning and used to be very quiet in the mornings. You can run there from the city center in 20mins if you know the route. I actually found the city parks very constricting and busy for running and typically headed into the suburbs for my runs. They’re not at all scenic (it’s an amazig contrast actually) but the traffic is light.

PS It’s likely to still be very cold - take tights and gloves etc.

I mean…I think I have been to Amsterdam.
I definately remember flying to Europe and buying a train ticket to Amsterdam.
From here details are a little sketchy, everything after getting off the train is a little hazy!
Haha, have a great trip.
If you see the white unicorn riding a rainbow, its probably not real

Well there enough great pools in amsterdam with good swimmers too
give me a call when you need help when you are in amsterdam.

Dude, bring your bike or rent one. You will regret it if you leave your bike behind. There is amazing riding there. Flat but beautiful and everyone is out on bikes.

I would start with The Space Cakes & then see where it goes from there… ;-p. Seriously Amsterdam & training, thats dedication!
