So the smaller goggles dont seem to work for me…can’t get any suction in or out of the water.
Tried Blueseventy Vision Goggles and seemed to provide good suction out of the water; however, when swimming I get water in left side fairly often.
Tried Aquasphere Kaiman and got awesome awesome suction out of water; however, when swimming I get water in left side fairly often.
In both cases water seems to seep in on the nose side, toward the bottom.
Any ideas? Anywhere from other goggles to try, to terrible swim tecnique? Have only started swimming two weeks ago, but not sure how much my probably erratic movements might come into play here.
the nose bridge probably doesn’t fit. Speedo Vanquishers fit nearly everyone, are reasonably cheap, and come with a few different nosepieces so you can get a good seal with minimal strap tension.
aside from going to the Vanquisher (smaller goggle), I have a couple of questions for you.
Are you experiencing the leaking issue on the first swim, or after use? ie How long are you using the goggle before it leaks?
When you put your goggles on, are you pulling the straps really tight? You shouldn’t need a lot of tension with the Kaiman to get a good seal.
Are you pushing the goggles on to your face? This is the normal process for most people to acquire a seal. It isn’t necessary as the light tension on the strap is enough to give a good seal.
How is the strap oriented on your head? Straight back from the goggle? Down from the goggle? Angled up from the goggle? I see a lot of folks with the strap straight back on their head or angled down. This is not providing the proper tension on the goggle sockets to keep the seal. A slight adjustment of the straps can help a lot!
Do you have deepset eye sockets or a taller nose bridge? That could be (as mentioned above) the fit issue.
I’ll save you purchasing around a dozen different goggles like i did, maybe more.
Buy a set of Aquasphere Vista mask goggles. You sound like a deep eye socket person such as myself and I literally tried every goggle in the known world and couldn’t get a proper seal until using the above
Another vote for the Vanquisher. Having the 2 separate straps really helps get the right angle/tension. Make sure the upper one is really high. If the water comes in on the bottom move the strap up and vice versa.
I too have had some issues finding a good pair of goggles. My origianl set of Kaimans were as close as I got. I’ve tried A.S. Kaiman, A.S. K180, A.S. Cayanne, TYR Nest Pro Nano. I recently purchased the Kaiman EXO and they are just different enough from the original ones to fix those last few issues I had with the original Kaiman set I had. It’s crazy that I’ve spent bike upgrade money on finding this out but it’s such a tough process to go nail down.
I’m new to swimming, so I swim in 50 meter laps with some rest in between. When I put goggles on first time, I get a good seal, but the more as I start removing them in between my 50 meter laps, it progressively worsens to where I’m not able to quickly get a seal.
I dont pull straps tight, at least not initially but have done so trying to see if that would solve the problem. Same with straps, i usually angle upward but have gone straight back exploring for a better seal.
This happens on both Kaiman and Visions…
An added note, i dislike the way smaller goggles feel in the eye socket which is why I’m exploring with larger ones. But I might just try the vanquishers before perhaps going more toward a msk style.
I dont think i have unusually deep eye sockets or tall nose bridge…but the world may differ on that opinion
The Aqua Sphere Kayenne are larger than the Kaiman. This larger model can also be found in a smaller version. It might be worth a try before moving to a goggle mask such as the Seal.
My local Master coach says Arena, after I showed him my split lense goggles, are the best, and he wore them in competition (Olympic qualifier level) even though he was sponsored by Speedo. Must admit it took some getting used to all the little flappy bits. But they do seem to work, for me. (they are a sort of swedish goggle)
I have never had a set of goggles that didn’t leak, I just gave up and swam blind in the pool. I never lost so much vision that I couldn’t swim a tri course.
All our faces are different shapes so obviously goggle choice is very individual. I have a draw full of highly recommended goggles from all the major brands at home, barely used, they all leak. I have two goggles that work me, the first is as perfect as I could hope for, and the second is slightly less comfortable and will leak if I don’t get the positioning right but is still very good for me. All other goggles leak - some leak a lot.
Update: I have been able to borrow a pair of Kayenne Goggles and got a pair of Vanquisher’s. If these two don’t do it, I’m definitely going the way of a swim mask, something like the AS Vista or SealXP. I want to avoid a drawer full of goggles…but I’m heading in that direction quickly, lol.
