I went online to order new prescription goggles today and was stumped trying to figure out what lens color would be best for a 7am race in Lake Alta.
I don’t do that much open water lake swimming, if I’m swimming in open water, it’s the Murky Pacific off L.A.
My choices are smoke, blue and clear. Which should I choose and why?
Any other thoughts from last year’s competitors about the swim conditions, water quality, etc.?
No real guidance for color here, but I can tell you that as you head back to shore the first time, the sun will be coming up over the mountains. I always breathe in that direction and I had a tough time with it in my eyes.
sun wasnt a issue for me on that course. too many mountain. it s a dark lake and as lots of fogg on it. i would go for blue as my first choice, clear as second and smoke/dark as last option.
there is no swimming facing the sun…or perhaps only for 100m on the second loop…

I’d generally go with clear. I think that is best all purpose choice given that you’d likely use them again?
I wouldn’t take a chance on clear goggles this year. The race is a month earlier than last year and the sun will be up almost an hour earlier. You will be looking directly at it at some point. You can’t count on fog on Alta Lake. Best idea is bring everything and check it out with a 7;00 AM practice swim.

Good idea.
Doing whistler this year (1st IM) and was thinking about goggles earlier this week. I think I’ll take this advice and bring clear and smoke.
I typically go with blue. Only for the psychology. Blue tinted lenses helps me make believe I’m swimming in a tropical paradise versus the muck of reality.
