Does anyone out there take glutamine? Do you take it with or without meals? Does it help in your recovery? Thanks.
I take a glutamine supplement immediately following a workout along with protein powder and Recoverite. My Ma runs Marathons and her coach recommended it and she got me hooked on it. I’ve ramped up my training quite a bit but I do believe it helps. I keep the powders (in smaller more portable containers) right in my car and am able to mix them up as soon as I get done at the gym or working out at the firestation.
Lifetime fitness sells a Gluatmine specific product that I buy directly from the club, good flavor and usually on sale.
I use it, after workouts, and in the AM on off days…which are usually after races… But I have used it by itself or inconjunction with a recovery pill like Recover Amino Power OR Base’s Recovery Activator. I used the NOW foods brand pills, they are like 12 bucks for 120 1000mg pills. I prefer pills to powder since its makes it so much easier to use. Whe done with workout I use my left over carbo drink to chase them down. L-Glutamine is an important food for your immune system and will help you none the less. I like to mix it with a great recovery pill cuz it will cover the broad range of goodies my body needs but I feel that the l-glutamine is the most important as well as other essential amino acids. Problem with Protein like Whey, it takes more than 30 mins to break down, your recovery window is 30 mins… I hope this helps.
Does help with recovery and supporting your immune system. It came recommended from a doc. I used to get sick a lot training over 10 hrs a week. Overall nutritition change with supplements, and sleep, helped.
I just started taking a glutamine with bcaa’s yesterday. It is a powder. It’s recommended either mix with 8 ounces of water for after workout or mix double and sip during workout. Not sure yet on recovery.
Yes good stuff-have been taking it for years…I go through this place, its the best bang for your $…
Before you take Glutamine you should watch this report, you may rethink it

Just remember that NONE of these “nutraceutical” studies were carried out with scientific rigor or endorsed by the FDA. There is no regulatory body to determine if claims and dosages/pill are correct. I’m not saying that they do or don’t work…the placebo effect is very strong for a lot of people.
They need to change that link. I think most have it memorized now.

I take it. I started taking it a few years ago when I was lifting a bunch. Started doing tris last year and I kept taking it. It helps in recovery and it is cheap.
Does it help in your recovery? Thanks.
no
sleep more
how did you measure that it helps your recovery?

I do blood tests to make sure my alpha-beta levels are inline with my white and red blood cells.
The days I forget to take it vs the days I take it I feel better. Could be the placebo effect, but I seem to feel better quicker when I take it vs when I don’t. Less stiffness & soreness.
Glutamine is what I call a fence supplement. There is nothing concrete to say for sure, yeah it’s going to make a difference, but there is a a fair amount of research data surrounding it saying it might be a good thing.
I personally add it in after workouts and before I go to bed( i found it helps me sleep better also). It’s really cheap, I’ve had the same tube of it for a long time. There are also no known side effects of taking it.
Also both AIS and the USOC are supporting research projects on its effects on performance.
I figure it’s worth the investment to use based on what is out there and how cheap it is.
there is a wealth of data on glutamine, of particular interest is a recent study showing a reduction in oxidative stress. Now, while the focus was on reducing percentage of deaths in a hospital environment, it still shows that oral ingestion of glutamine has beneficial effect where oxidative stress is/has been placed on human cells.
Do you get the L-Glutamine or do you get the L-Glutamine Alpha-Ketoglutarate?
Regular l glutamine.
I used to take it when I was lifting heavy for recovery. But then again I took every supplement recommended by muscle magazines, friends, and anyone that was bigger than me! Depending on info you believe it’s either a non-essential amino acid (you get enough through diet, etc. beef, beets, cabbage, chicken, dairy products, eggs, fish, milk, parsley, pork, poultry, spinach and yogurt) or conditionally essential (you supplement when the body is stressed…intense workouts, disease, etc.) There are “studies” that using supplements may or may not actually increase the body’s stores. Up to you. Since I stopped the bodybuilding thing I go by the “use a quality recovery drink product (most have ample protein) and the rest is just peeing away money” philosophy. Good multivitamin, proper rest, good well balanced diet, common sense stuff. That is, of course, in addition to the nutrition during training and racing and I try to keep that as simple as possible. That said, use what you think works for you. Good luck!
If whey is such a problem, why is it the main source of protein in recovery products made by Hammer, Powerbar, Endurox, First Endurance, etc?
sorry cant speak for these companies… but I often wonder why hammer does what they do… But from most recovery drinks take Ultragen, have you seen the amino acid profile in there, ALOT. which is great as well as 6000mg of Glutamine!! So the protein isnt a bad thing but I think you need amino acids and such to gets a speedy absorption. Hammer is wierd, I prefer more simple sugars after a workout not complex like Malto, but a preference. There is alot of great info on it out there and most say (hammer too…) a 30 minute window after a workout, to me I want what will be absorbed the fastest which is simple sugars, amino acids (not having to break down whey into BCAA’s) but also some protein is a great thing just normally doesnt fit in the “window”. Everyone is different and best to try things out and see what works for you. I like to keep things simple, thats why I usually dont do drinks…
