Gluing tape

Anyone have experience with tufo gluing tape or any gluing tape. I have a tubular wheel set coming and I am trying to figure out the pros and cons.

Is the gluing tape as strong or close to being as strong as fully gluing up a rim over three days?

thanks for the help.

Merry Christmas Gift Return Day.

I would stick with glue, the tape can be a real nightmare to get off in the event of a flat, or just in the event that you might want to change your tire.
The glue in very moderate amounts provides plenty of sticking and easy removal.

use glue

the tape is a mess if you flat
some say the tape makes the tire slower

the glue just smells better

Dirt.

And a third vote for glue. Continental specifically.

If you do opt for tape **do not **use the TUFO extreme tubular adhesive tape. It is apparently intended for track use and is super strong. So strong in fact that if you fix a tire to your rim with it removal of the tire will result in its almost certain destruction.

The regular strength adhesive tape is easier to use but Continental cement is easier still.

I’ve got a new set of tubulars as well. Do you put regular rim tape on the wheel or do you apply the glue to the naked rim? If you have to fix a flat on the go, is it safe to ride with a freshly glued tire?

If I flat I have a old worn tire that was once glued to a rim to replaced it.
I don’t apply any more glue if I flat out on the road.
I then ride with some caution
when i get home i change the tire to a new or better one.
reglue both at home.
I use TUFO tires which are not a fast tire.
TUFO has a tire repair sealant I can put in the tire to repair the flat

I hope this answers your question
just say no to rim tape and tubbies !!!

Thanks for all the info. I’ll go the glue route.

If you flat on a tubular on the road you can do a couple things.

The best choice is Vittoria Pit Stop- an aerosol foam sealant and pressurized inflator unit all in one. You simply inject the sealant foam into the tire along with the compressed gas from the Vittoria PitStop cartirdge. It is one easy step. The sealant seals the leak (as long as it isn’t too large) and the compressed gas re-inflates the tire up to about 90 PSI in the case of a 700 X 23c tire.

The advantage to Vittoria Pit Stop is you don;t have to remove your tire from the rim so the glue stays 100% intact.

If you opt to change your tubular on the road you will either have to carry a roll of TUFO tubular adhesive tape or you will simply install a new, unstretched tubular onto the rim and inflate to full pressure. The tire is **not glued on **at this point so cornering must be done very, very carefully. I don;t recommend this technique as it can be extremely dangerous. You are basically relying on the glue residue on the rim to retain the tire and that is an iffy proposition on a good day.

The best way to fix a flat is avoidance so I use the TUFO tire sealant that is injected into the tire when you inflate the tire to full pressure. It sits inside the tire and then rapidly seeps into any puncture from glass or any sharp object that pierces the tire. This stuff gives me enough confidence that I don’t even carry a spare in a race anymore, even at Ironman.

Tom,
Does the pit stop work with the Zipp style valve extenders (the hollow ones) or do I need to use valve extenders that put the valve at the end of the extender?

We did in fact test it and it does work with valve extenders.

Awesome advice Tom (as always). Some time back I had a freind who had slime in device rather like a grease gun and he put some in my rear tire for me. I raced on that tire for three years with no flats. I’ve gotta git me some a dat Pit Stop!!
Perchance do you know a good bike shop that sells it?
;-o

I have heard good things about the glue tape, and understand it dries quickly
.

I used the Tufo tape for a few years before switching back to clinchers due to moving to the desert and cacti.

The Extreme is great stuff. If you flat the tire is toast anyway, so its garbage. Cut the tire with a razor blade, pull it off the rim, put spare on and GO. It takes about 2 minutes.

The extreme tape had two sets of tape on it. The top layer came off with the flat leaving the next layer on the rim for the spare. It was great stuff!! And no mess with old glue either. No reason to pre-glue either. Can’t really see any reason to use glue : )

I found this searching on the web. A little guide to gluing.

The Tufo extreme tape would keep the tire on real good and than I could go with the tufo tire sealant to prevent most flats. Try and extend the use of the tire??

We did in fact test it and it does work with valve extenders.
Edit: It does work - once. Chances are high that it will clog up the valve stem and harden there. Small price to pay for a super fast fix.

Tom
I use Tufo extreme tape and love it - as Zipp had mentioned - the tubie is toast once flatted - I also carry a razor taped under my saddle and cut the tire off - a few minutes later and I have a new tire taped on - securely with no mess

Hello Triandduit,

I have switched to clinchers after using tubulars for many years because tests seem to indicate better rolling resistance for clinchers; making them a faster tire except when flat, then tubulars are better.

The best glue tested in this experiment below was Vittoria Mastik’One.

Do you put down a new roll of glue tape or can you change it once before needing to put down the glue tape?

Thanks for all the info everyone.

“If you flat the tire is toast anyway, so its garbage”

No its not.
