I’m headed to Spain for a couple of weeks at the end of May and bringing my bike along. I’ve read a little bit in a couple of cycling mags about some pro teams basing themselves out of there but I can’t seem to find much on the interweb about ride routes etc. Just about every search so far has landed me on some sort of tour company. Anyone here been there? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
I have done a bit of riding north of Girona near Figueres. Most of the back roads are in good condition and if you don’t mind getting lost, just pick a direction and ride for a couple of hours.
Then pull out your map (you brought a detailed map right?) and find your way back. There are towns everywhere, so it’s easy to get your bearings. Depending on how far you want to go, there are rides direct from Girona, or a quick drive away.
Google Maps is your friend too. Most roads in the region have been mapped for streetviews. There are lots of hills to the East. Have a look at GI531/532 through Llora, les Serres and Constantins (NE of Girona), then swing south through el Mas Lluners on the GI540. Or GI542/551 through Angles, Osor, Sant Hilari Sacalm and Santa Coloma de Farners (runs parallel to the C-25 for the last leg).
There are bigger climbs towards the Pyrenees north to the French border. Also, check out the daily itineraries of some of those tour websites that take you on the ‘pro’ training rides.
Enjoy your trip!
Erik
Sweet, thanks for the details!

Lots of pros base themselves there. You won’t get drug tested, thats for sure.
If Rioja is considered a drug I’m going to fail any sort of test badly!
I’ve been there twice. Once for a long weekend, and a second time for 8 or 9 days. The old part of town is very cool. Some good places to eat, too. Be prepared for eating dinner no earlier than 7:30 - 8:00PM.
Oh, you wanted to know about riding?
There are some pretty nice routes riding out of Girona. You can also drive a bit first, to get to some bigger climbs (I didn’t bother with that). I’d have to look at a map to remember all the different routes I did. I basically looked at a map, and then asked the guy who ran the hotel where I stayed.
One popular route is to ride to the coast (to Tossa de Mar) then along the breathtaking coast road to San Feliu, then loop back to Girona. The Els Angels climb is just outside of Girona. Another is to Girona - St Gregori - Planes d’Hostoles, with a side climb in Amer which most of the pros do in training (so I was told). Another, longer (and really awesome) route goes to St Hilari Sacalm (a great climb to an old town) … don’t remember all the roads.
If you decide to go, PM me and I can give try to jog my memory some more and look at some maps.
forgot to mention … check out Michael Barry’s web site. He is based in Girona, and has written some posts about riding, training, and living in the area.
I think he has some route descriptions also.
