Had a nasty crash this past weekend and my beloved Atmos likely saved me from severe head tramua. It’s toast and so is my bike frame but that’s another thread.
I am sticking with Giro (for life), either another Atmos or upgrading to the Aeon.
My quesiton, does the Aeon sacrifice any protection for weight and ventiation?
I called Giro but the phone rep didn’t really help.
Prior to this accident I was actually looking at LG Diamond and Course for extra ventilation to possilbly race at IMLOU.
However, after this scary incident I am not willing to sacrifice safety for extra ventilation or weight.
Any info would be appreciated

Maybe move to an Air Attack. It is a more substantial helmet and cover more of your head and is still a Giro.
As a bonus, it is more aerodynamic.
Also, if you are super concerned about safety, I’d probably pick up a POC helmet (even as ugly as they are).
Not familar with POC, might look it up but the Giro Atmos did it’s job so I trust it
.
The answer is that there is no way of knowing…both helmets meet a minimum level of protection (CPSC standards). Beyond that, no one knows. The Atmos or Aeon may offer more protection, but Giro is not required to release that information. But again, both meet a minimum level of protection, so in that sense, they are equal.
The reality is that you would likely never notice any difference in protection from one to another. Get the one that fits best and comes in a color scheme that you like.
No helmet or helmet brand is rated better or worse than any other, they all pass the same drop test. It’s just a pass/fail, there’s no safety rating or anything else available. You might look at overall head coverage, or helmet shape, but those are just guesses as to how they’ll help in an impact.
Choose something you like and will wear, I’m sure a number of people, like myself have gone through a number of helmets, and we’re all still here, so don’t get too caught up on the fact that this one brand saved you, as though any other wouldn’t have done the same, you simply can’t know.
Well POC’s cover more of the rear of the head that a lot of the other helmets. Now it could be all marketing, but POC says they place safety first, and design-looks second. So something to consider.

dons marketing cap
This was a brilliant positioning move by POC. they could not own “lightest” or “best ventilated”, nor did they have a brand anyone knew. They needed a strong differentiator to enter the market strongly. Well, what’s the number one job of a helmet? Boom - they can own “safety.” MOreover, by owning “safety” it gave them license to develop butt-ugly designs…which can also become a statement by itself.
Really, really, smart move.
And they got a pro team to actually wear the things…
Get a white POC and pair it with an orange jersey with a white cross on it and you too can be a crash test dummy.

Yup…ugliest helmet in the peloton.

at least Garmin stopped using POC’s first TT helmet (the new short-tail one isn’t too bad)

Similar in some ways to Volvo re positioning of the brand, however it does not mean they product do not place safety at a higher level and as such provides higher safety performance, ie not mutually exclusive…
My take, if the lid i have on isn’t as safe as another one i won’t be finding out about it anyway…
I emailed Giro and let them know about the accident and that I was thankful for the protection of the Atmos. I know the Atmos is safe enough, at least for me. Giro responded very gratefully and also made me aware of a crash replacement program. I get 30% off so thats a plus
You can trust your emotional gut reaction, or you can do a little research. I recommend looking here, here, and here. If you like how giro fits fine, but beware of sharp points on the back that could catch something in certain types of accidents.

Good point.
I slammed the back of my head on the ground. Those sharp points helped keep my head further off the ground, I think. My neck was very sore for a couple of days. Now just deal with back pain which I hope goes a way…
Thanks for the links I will check it out
I’ve cracked two Atmos helmets this year… working well so far so I’ll keep buying them.
Whoa!
Did you know about its crash replacement program?
yep, 30% and you ship the old helmet and buy one from them.
I understand the brand/model loyalty. Had a crash with a car that u-turned in front of me a few weeks back and felt my Giro IONOS saved me. Going back to pick up another (now discontinued) today.
Searched but couldn’t find a dealer anywhere local who stocked or would order a POC. Any advice on a good source?
