Giro Atmos vs. Ionos

Anyone make the switch from Giro’s Atmos to Ionos? Would like to know your thoughts on the differences between the two. Thanks.

$50 and color scheme?

That’s my impression, too. The helmets look very similar (and some of the paint schemes are the same). Giro says that the Ionos is much more ventilated, but I wonder how that translates into actual experience…

Considering the switch from Ionos to Volt, myself, for the same reasons identified above–seems like a better value and cleaner looking helmet.

I had to get a new helmet this week and compared these side by side. Ventilation was better on the Ionos for sure. I think I remember the weight being noticeably lighter on the Ionos too but who really cares about that. The big difference was the comfort of the fit. The Ionos is pimp. Super comfortable. I never thought I would spend $200 on a helmet but I said fu(k it. It came with a bunch of different pads to change out but I haven’t had a chance to really look at what they are for. Maybe cold weather riding???

Were you comparing the Atmos and Ionos or Bell Volt and Ionos? I only ask since some of the posters above have been talking about the Bell Volt.

If you were comparing the Atmos and Ionos, that’s great news.

Atmos and Ionos. They had the Bell but I don’t even remember picking it up.

Fit is slightly different. I have a large head and found the ionos too tight but the atmos fitted perfectly so I went with that.

Had the Atmos…packed it to Florida for IM so I didn’t have to wear the aero thing while simply puttering around. Pulled it out of luggage and the “rock loc” thing was broken and it wouldn’t stay on my head. With a small head, Inside Out didn’t have the S-M atmos, but had the Ionos. So I pulled the trigger and paid for the helmet - I’d need one when I get home anyway.

Impressions - fit was like a glove, too ventilated at 50 degrees, but came with a liner to block the vents. Other than that, looks the same, but has more ventilation, and fits better. Worth the extra $$? Well, I invested enough money in my head that $50 is a drop in the bucket to make sure my noggin is comfortable and protected, so I was OK with it.

Completely agree, the fit of the Ionos is definitely neater than the Atmos. I use a L and noticed that I didn’t need to do the Roc-Loc band at the back up as tight on the Ionos as on the Atmos. Similarly a friend who uses a M Atmos tried on an Ionos and needed to go up to a L.

Having said that they are great helmets and they work well. I was rear ended my a car at about 25-30mph ( I was doing about 20mph ) a week or two ago amd was sent flying down the road. Nothing broken but my head slammed violently into the ground on the right side and my Atmos was completely destroyed. Quite impressive, the carbon fibre skeleton of the helmet stayed intact and kept the polystyrene inner in place as it broke up and dissipated the impact. I lost consciousness for about 5-10 mins but I dread to think what would have happened without the helmet.

Damn. I’m just glad you’re okay!

The Ionos is nice and light and has a good fit but I hate the fact that you can’t remove the staps to wash them. If you sweat as much as me, that’s an issue.

I dented my Atmos and recently switched to an Ionos. Both are great helmets. Padding in the Ionos is plusher and it seems quieter.

Anybody know what the procedure is to partake of the crash replacement program? Crashed last Sunday to avoid a left turning car in oncoming traffic lane and cracked my helmet (thank god) while breaking both my wrists and separating both my shoulders. The Giro website does not have a FAQ or information on their crash replacement program (through probikekit does for UK customers).

Thanks if you do.
