I’ve decided to purchase this helmet. Now, should I go shield or no-shield…and why?
Thanks for your input.
The new Garneau helmet and a pair of sunglasses if you’re looking for aero.
I have the shield and love it, no fogging or drippy glasses and you “feel” more aero. Leave some sunglasses at T2.
I really like my shield. It takes the pressure off my nose bridge and temples. I have a small head so sunglasses dont fit well with most helmets. It has very good optics. Flip it up splash water on ur face dlip it down.
If you buy it with the shield you can always remove the shield. If you buy one that does not give you the shield option you cannot add the option later.
I like using my shield.
One issue I’ve found with the shield is when it gets windy, it kinda creates a vortex just under the bottom of the lens and this is kinda annoying for my eyes. Not the best for fast downhill descents for this reason either.

Interesting. I’ve not had that problem myself, but of heard of another guy that happens to. I must be slower than you I love the shield. It also gives people that, “Oh, he’s a badass” thought. If you like that. If not, than you can just love the helmet and everything about it.
Interesting take and something to consider.
I went no shield on mine, mostly because I dig riding with my Tifosi’s. I think the shield versions look cool but I much prefer being able to wear my glasses really tight to my face. Probably just a personal preference.
I have a shield. However i like wearing my glasses on warmer days for the air on my face. On the colder days like now I wear the shield to block more wind.
During muddy cyclocross races I wear the shield with glasses underneath and throw the shield off when it gets muddy and have clean glasses for a bit.
I’m curious if shield or no shield is bigger seller for Giro.
+1. Slightly OT, but I too was wondering this. I’d guess that the non-visor model sold more simply based on price point (~$40 more / already have glasses, etc.). Interested if any data is available on that…
I have the shield version, but I got the helmet for CX racing.
I have not raced with the shield in place. But, I have ridden in temps around 5°F with the helmet and shield. Add a face mask, clear tape over the shield vents, and I have the best cold weather set up.
The shield is anchored well to the helmet and it sits right where I would want it for any type if riding.
For the extra $, I would say the shield is a no-brainer.
We’ll have to see if the helmet/shield see any use once road/Crit season roll around. Maybe early spring races. This helmet is noticibly warmer than a regular road helmet.

Visors are highly individual-specific. For some they will test faster, for others they will test slower.
Go with the shield. If you don’t like it just take it off. I love mine. Raced all season with the shield in very windy conditions and had no issues what so ever. Plus, I look like robocop with the shield on.
Ok here’s another question. Which color do you prefer? I know this is highly individualistic but curious what others like…
I got the white and silver. I also like the black and blue. Kind of wish I got that one but was worried about black color and possible heat issues in hot races.
Go the shield. It’s an intimidating look and is a great example of product integration. The look is still new but I think it will catch on more and more in 2014…

I also got the white and silver. Was also concerned about heat, can’t decide now if it would have been a problem or not. Do any of you with the dark colors have heat issues(from the helmet)?
The matte grey is good looking. But white may be ideal to tolerate summer heat
