Looking to see what you guys think for long term use. I just bought one and can return it. I don’t really like the way it feels on my head (it does fit, but I think the MIPS system makes it feel like it doesn’t fit. It seems high on my head. The visor is kinda cool, and odd at the same time. I am coming from the Giro A2 and it seems to have a smaller profile.
I pad $250 for it, and figure I am better off sending it back and keeping my Giro A2.
Is the aero gain that much more over the A2? If I ride the following courses, what time differences can I expect?
Sprint of 18 miles
Olympic of 24 miles
Half 56 miles

I have both helmets and race in both. I think the Aerohead is a little faster than the A2 but who knows without actually testing for your own position. The Aerohead is a warmer helmet with the face shield so I race with the A2 when it’s a heater. I’m happy with both, but if the A2 is working for you in all cases then send the Aerohead back.
It might be worth noting: take some videos of you in your race setup and see which one closes the gap between the back of the helmet and your neck/shoulder better. IIRC, this is an okay way to wind tunnel guesstimate (without actually testing).
Also, the aerohead may feel like it sits too high on your head, but I’ve learned to reposition the helmet way more “on top” of my head so when I’m standing straight up, the visor doesn’t even cover my eyes; however, when I’m riding and my head is low/tucked, it’s perfectly situated to fill the gap I referred to previously.
The Aerohead is the fastest Giro makes so Its faster than the A2. The Vanquish is faster than the A2 for that matter. How much faster depends on a lot of things but overall Aerohead is faster.
I posted in Rudy Project The Wing helmet thread. I have both and don’t like Aerohead anymore. It fits like a crap just like you said. Only thing I like about Aerohead and you can put it on really fast although it’s an aero helmet, so it’s good for Sprint & Olympic distances. Other than that, heavy, bulky, hot inside, visor cracks easily and view is not that good when your face is down. Return it and get The Wing. You will love it.

well…
in general yes to your post.
As an absolute? not even close.

Keep in mind, for you…I’ve never liked any Giro helmet I tried on until the aerohead and I find it incredibly comfortable haha.

Try The Wing if you get a chance. It’s lighter, smaller and better.
I bought a Giro Aerohead back in mid 2019 and would not return to a normal cycling helmet now. I train in mine all the time. Just done a winter season of training over here in the UK, wind, rain, more wind and its been fantastic. I do wear a very thin skull cap under the Giro and that has made it more comfortable.
l used the Giro at IM Cozumel and again, it performed well, never been too hot or too cold in it plus it gives you a lot more face protection from UV, dust and kamikaze bugs !
The only downside l have found, is the face shields do crack, starting with the nose bridge sector. I use mine 3/4 times a week x 2 years, so l don’t think l can grumble really. Plus, l just bought another one in the sale !
I had the wing 57 (right? the one before this RP) and loved the ventilation and the weight but it wasn’t uber comfortable. Would love to try it but also pretty happy with the aerohead right now…

Without going to the wind tunnel you would be absolutely nuts to ride the A2. DD can probably give you the exact stats but back in the day the Aerohead was winning in like 8-9/10 over the next best helmet, which was likely not the A2.
I am interested in the wing, but not at the price point right now. That’s also part of the reason I’m not loving the aerohead.
Another poster brought up the position relative to the helmet and being in aero and seeing well. That is an attractive feature, but again, I like my A2 and don’t think I’ll keep the aerohead.

Actually, this is what DD said. I can’t figure out how to link the post but this is what he said in 2016

there are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind if you’re not going to test.
Go with the helmets that seem to work the best for the most number of people and avoid the helmets that seem to work the least often. The helmets that work most often are the Giro Advantage 2 (top 3 helmet about 90% of the time) LG P09 (top 3 helmet about 85% of the time -although when this one is bad it tends to do worse than the Giro A2). The new Giro Aerohead seems to be doing really well for most of the tests that I’ve seen, although I’ve only tested it on 1 person and it wasn’t that great.
"
yes the Aerohead tests well but it is not head and shoulders above the P09 or even the A2. Very questionable if he can’t buy more speed elsewhere with his $250. And let’s not forget the visor vs sun glasses discussion.
I actually like the fit of the Aerohead. My only issue is that replacing the visor is ridiculously expensive. I dropped the visor during a race and a magnet popped out. Have to order an entire visor instead of being able to just replace the magnetic clip thing.
Let’s say the AH is 10sec/40k faster for you (prob a reasonable ave, but YMMV). Is that worth $250? That’s a judgement call.
Personally I’m quite happy with my AH. I can quickly don/remove it with the visor in place, so no time spent in T1 putting on sunglasses. I’ve never felt overheated in it, even on climbs. You have the option to remove the visor mid-race due to fog/mist (not uncommon here in SF), though there is the visor fragility issue. MIPS is a nice safety bonus. My only complaint it that the helmet seems heavier than it needs to be.

I think there are some other qualitative considerations as well:
AH has MIPS, which has some non-zero safety value.
AH doesn’t cover the ears with the helmet component, which also adds some value for day-to-day training use.
AH also looks less like the classic ‘Rebel Trooper helmet’.
Is that worth $250, assuming neutral aero characteristics? I’d think so, but that depends on OP’s level of wealth and what he or she values.
