Similar story. I was out of town training with a group of people. We went to a large masters workout and I got in the slow lane, while one of the women in our group jumps in the fast lane. Their was only one other girl in the fast lane, and this was a very large very serious group of swimmers.
So the girl in the fast lane tells my friend its the fast lane. Friend says she’ll be OK. Girl asks if she swims a lot, Friend says not any more but she used to. Girl asks if she ever swims in meets. Not for a long time. Girl asks when was the last one. Friend says two years ago at the the Atlanta Olympic games. Girl leaves her alone.

There’s a woman at my pool I see quite often giving swim lessons. One day I asked her about it, and she told me to grab her info at the front desk on the way out, and she’d be happy to set up a lesson for me.
I grab the info – it’s a postcard. Mentions her two backstroke Golds at the Atlanta Olympics (at age 14), 6 national championships, 16 time All American achievements, and the various halls of fame she’s been inducted to. Now I pay closer attention when I see her instructing others
friend: I have a friend who wants to start doing tri’s.
me:…cool that’s great…is she training for a sprint?
friend:…I don’t really know…I know she’s rides her bike a lot but that’s about it.
7 months later I meet the friend…
me: I heard you were training for a tri?
friend: yes, been ramping up learning how to swim better.
me: really? What tri do you have planned.
friend: Kona…are there others???
me:…speachless.
me 8 months after that…even more speachless…found out she did Kona in 13+
Or how about that one time, on slowtwitch, where this guy posted some swimming tips, and some other guy wanted to know his credentials… priceless.
What is your swimming history?
Good question. Retired physician. Three time Olympian (68, 72, 76) 3 Olympic medals, 10 world records. Son, Gary Jr, 3 time Olympian (96, 2000, 2004), 10 Olympic medals. Currently, Head coach and technical director of the The Race Club, which sent 33 swimmers to the past three Olympics and earned 18 Olympic medals.
I was personally a triathlete for 10 years in Arizona competing in Olympic distances only. Now stick to swimming where I have set 6 Masters World Records.

Fact check please.
In 1996 at the age of 14, and already with 2 National Championships under her belt, Beth placed first in the 200m backstroke at the US Olympic Trials and second in the 100m backstroke, earning her a spot as one of the youngest members on the United States Olympic Team. That summer in Atlanta, Georgia, Beth swam to a gold medal finish in the 100m Backstroke at the XXVI Olympic Games and swam the backstroke leg of the gold medal winning 4x100m Medley Relay.
I remember reading about Gwen before she made the team and saw that she was from Milwaukee. I then went, “My friend from Milwaukee is named Jorgensen and she has a sister.” Checked facebook, yep it is her sister.
