I commute to work on a road bike, then take a ferry across the harbour. Yes, I’ve got a great life!
Another Ferry Cyclist has just bought a Giant Defy Advance, with hydraulic disc brakes. He paid about $3500 NZD which is about $2700-ish USD I think.
Does anyone have any experience with these bikes or similar? My current commuter bike (KHS Flite 900) is a similar price range but has nasty old rubber rim brakes. For about 15 years now I’ve been looking for a disc equipped road bike (it rain a LOT here in NZ) and now might be the time to buy one. (or should I wait a little longer?)
I don’t want to discuss the rubber rim brake issue vs disc brake issue as that’s been hashed around enough already. I’m looking for a disc equipped road bike as my next commuter/trainer and was wondering what’s out there, and more importantly, what’s good.
If you want disc the Defy is a good option. The 1.25 stem can be a bit of a pain, likewise the seatpost.
Trek Domane Disc still hasn’t filtered to lower price points here.
Cannondale Synapse alloy disc is pretty nice.
Felt have some nice carbon disc CX bikes on special.
Soma Wolverine is available here if you want steel.
Or blow away the Ferry crowd with a Colnago AC-R Disc.
Of course, a Cervelo S3 disc would be my preference, but they have to build them first
Can’t have everything. Or at least that’s what SWMBO tells me every time I see a bike I like.
Colnago ACR Ultegra/105 Hydro disc appears to be only a little more expensive than the Defy. That is very interesting.
If you’re not in a hurry, I’d give it time. I think you’ll see a lot more disc road bikes soon, meaning more competition, variety, and slightly better pricing. Also, does the defy have fender mounts?

Can you explain the problems with the stem and seatpost?

Non-standard size and shape, so you can’t wander into a LBS and buy a non-Giant stem or seatpost if you need to replace it.
Considering that most tri bikes these days have their own seatposts that you can’t swap out for anything else. The seatpost isn’t a major issue for me. The stem however could be a pain.
