GI issues post run

Does anyone else have horrible GI issues and stomach upset after a run workout? It seems more pronounced after a longer run, but I don’t seem to have issues after a strenuous bike or swim. I am a nurse, so did an occult blood test and developed it at work… it was positive for blood in stool. So, I made an appointment with GI doc who seems to think it is either Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. I’m set up for a CT enterography tomorrow and an endoscopy/colonoscopy next Tuesday. It seems rare that I have any issues at all when I’m not running hard. I did triathlons all season and can’t remember any horrible episodes, now training for a half marathon and GI symptoms are pretty apparent. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had symptoms like these.

I used to quite frequently, and no only do after really long hard efforts. I cut most of the issues out after I stoped 90% of my dairy consumption. No milk, no cheese, just an occasional yogurt. That took care of almost everything. Now for really long and hard efforts (think half marathon or more), I take 1/2 of an immodium immediately before, and am fine. I haven’t had issues for 5+ years now.

If i drink a diet root beer anytime before a long run i get runner shits like no one business. I’ve even had to pull off the road to go. Needlessly to say I do not drink diet root beer anymore.

ugh runner shits are the worse.

I do most of my running in the morning, before breakfast, so will generally depend on what I have eaten the night before. If I gorge on wholemeal bread late, my body usually starts to shift it through my system in the morning more so when I have been running. Only once during…

I’ve had issues a couple of times, even on short runs. Sometimes, after a few Km I have to go to the bathroom. If I’ve only got a couple of Km left to go I’ll just “clench” up and run it out. Run right to a bathroom. All of the pressure however, causes my hemmeroids to act up and I’ll get bleeding. Really frigging annoying. Fortunately it doesn’t happen often.

Similar symptoms many times for me as well, similar workup through a GI doc as well. Turned out to be ischemic colitis, so I have to be real careful about hydrating properly on the run. Hope you have a diagnosis and a solution to your issues soon.

same here. i didn’t think human beings were capable of that level of devastation.

I have had and still do have issues every now and then. But almost the opposite of what a previous post said, ever since I’ve started drinking Chocolate Milk (almost 3 years now) first thing after a run, I have it far less regularly than before. Maybe after an open Half or a HIM but that’s about it. Best luck!

After a hard run, or even during, I can get wicked gi issues. I’ve never had it diagnosed, its usually when I run too hard or when I’ve eaten a lot/rich food. So I try and eat sensibly and not run too hard. I’d be curious to hear what your solutions are.

Your symptoms are mainly running related, unlike chronic inflammatory enteritis. Good luck with tomography and scope. My guess is ischemic colitis and your tests will be normal or an outside chance of physical anomaly. Post the findings.

So, done with CT enterography, colonoscopy, and upper endoscopy. CT showed absolutely nothing. Colonoscopy and upper GI showed gastritis, as well as one ulcer in my colon and some redness and irritation in other areas. The gastroenterologist took 4 or 5 biopsies and the pathology report should be back soon. I was really hoping for the runners shits, now I’m just hoping it isn’t Crohn’s disease. For my last 10k, I took an Imodium an hour or so before the race and that seemed to help. Thanks for your input. I will update with the pathology report whenever I get the news.

Mom of a (now grown-up) Crohn’s kid - it’s a diagnosis that usually takes a while to obtain. You really need to have a biopsy hit the exact spot - not easy. My daughter is an athlete, and while exertion wasn’t great for her, it wasn’t a diagnostic factor. Hope that’s not what it is - but if it is, I can give you resources.

Good luck.

Biopsy report is back, ischemic colitis. Seems almost common in athletes. I am antibiotics will take care of the ulcer they found, and hopefully my symptoms won’t be as pronounced. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
