Doing my first HIM next weened in Muncie. The race website says they will have gatorade and water at the bike aid stations. I plan on just grabbing waters but was wondering how exactly it works. Do I just slow down grab a water fill my aerodrink and then chuck the empty bottle somewhere after the station? Or do I stop and then fill up and drop the empty bottle at the aid station? I don’t want to litter but I also don’t want to stop. Also are the bottles typically already open or do I have to fumble trying to open it? Last question, typically is the gatorade in the sports type bottle that fits bottle cages, or are they twist off caps also?
The Endurathon has great volunteers at there aid stations you shouldn’t have any issues. Slow down and either yell out what your looking for or see what there offering. It’s been a couple of years since I did it but it was really pretty easy. If you have an Aerodrink, grab the water, fill, pitch, they were sport type bottles two years ago so you may have to open the top. The bottles they hand out will fit your cages whether it’s gatorade or water.
Don’t come to a stop but slow down to accept the bottle you want and pitch your emptys in the area of the aid station or shortly there after. Keep your eyes open for riders near you too.
If you don’t need any fluids/gels, keep towards the left and just cruise on by.
Have fun it’s a great race!
At Hawaii 70.3 the Gatorade bottles were sport-bottles that fit bottle cages and had the “drink tops” on them. They were already open - as I discovered when I “opened” one and wondered why nothing came out.
Can’t tell you about the water bottles - didn’t take any on the bike, but I’d assume they’ll fit in the bottle cages fine.
Pretty much what Rottie said. Muncie was my first HIM last year and I had no troubles at the aid stations. They had sport top gatoradeand water that fit in my profile design cages just fine.
I’m racing this year as well, it’s a great race. Good luck.
We are looking forward to having you in Muncie next weekend. As far as the aid stations go, I dont think you will have any issues. Our volunteers will stand there holding sport top Lemon Lime Gatorade or Water bottles. You ride by at whatever speed you feel comfortable and grab one. There will be a marked “drop zone” 50 yards before and after the station for you to discard any bottles. If you are using normal water bottles, just huck them leading up to the aid station and then grab new ones. If you are filling an aero-system or Speedfill, fill that up and then throw the empty bottle. The bottles will fit in standard bottle cages and the plastic will have already been removed so you just pop the top (like you do on a normal bottle, either with your teeth or hand) and drink away.
Let me know if you have any other questions. We are almost sold out and expect another great race for our 31st Edition.
and don’t forget to THANK the volunteers!!
Do I just slow down grab a water fill my aerodrink and then chuck the empty bottle somewhere after the station?
Please make sure you drop the empty at the aid station or other officially approved area where volunteers will see it and pick it up. Pitching bottles, or anything else, beyond an aid station will stir up the locals who might then work to deny the race any necessary permits. I’ve seen it happen.
