Gel in Waterbottle

Anyone put their gel in a 24 oz water bottle. I tried it this weekend but i had trouble figuring out how to gauge how much i would take in each time i ate. I put enough calories for 6 hrs and realized that i only ate half the bottle. And whats the best gel to use in a water bottle. GU is really thick. Any tips on how you guys do this.

Powerbar gels mix nicely in the bottles. My favorite is Kona punch, but I’ve also mixed First Endurance Kona mocha. I typically do this to avoid a littering penalty.

I do that and just make sure I put in the amount of liquid I know ill drink.

You could also check out those gelbot bottles. May work better for you.

I’ve used Infinit Napalm in a water bottle…get one heck of a sugar buzz from that

Absolute and total waste of money. Use some sirup, add maltodextrine and tablesalt and you will have the same nutritional “value” (ie carbs + salt) for a fraction of the cost. AND you safe yourselve from a bunch of unnecessary chemicals.

The only reason for a gel is portability, if you mix it into a water bottle anyway, it is simply sponsoring the sport “nutrition” manufacturers.

My favorite mix btw (but the choices are endless): 200ml applejuice + 30g Maltodextrine + 1g Salt in a 750ml water bottle.

Need more calories? Add more malto.

No offense, but a gel is about $1.25 and is the least expensive thing in the sport. Particularly if you only use them for racing.

Yes, I’ve dropped in two gels to a water bottle before. If the water is super cold I found it doesn’t mix well.

No offense taken. But at 100 cals 1,25 $ is VERY expensive. It is maltodextrine and sugar. 4000 of those calories cost about 5$ retail. You do the math. I use them for racing because of portability. But dissoving them into a water bottle makes absolutely no sense. Use long and expensive processing to end up with sugar in a foil. Then dump it into a water bottle? Why not add the sugar + malto in a water bottle in the first place?

Read the ingredients list, gels only make sense for their portability, there is NOTHING special in them. Carbs (sugar + malto) and minerals (sodium). Maybe some coffein. All cheap bulk items. You pay for the convenient packaging. But removing that packacking to dumb them into a water bottle? Sorry … they got you

If you have 500 calories and want 100 per hour. mark 5 evenly spaced horixzintal lines on the bottle and drink to the next mark at timed intervals

I find the High5 Iso Gels really good for decanting into a drinks bottle, that was my nutrition on the bike for my last two IMs. They are runny because they have, essentially, added the water for you. Your man adal would love them…

You can get about a dozen in a regular 750ml drinks bottle, I think I was able to fit about 11 in my Specialized Virtue when I used that one year, which was fine at IM Austria adding to some on course energy drink. Whatever, I would decant the number of gels I had calculated I needed for the bike. In terms of dosage I use the scientific measure that is a “swig”, every 20 minutes. Really, you just need to figure that stuff out through practice on your long rides, if I get through the number of gels I wanted for the duration of ride I was doing, then my “swig” is the right size. On the IM bike leg you can guage your progress by distance, ie if I’m 28 miles in I should be a quarter way down the bottle, roughly. Don’t wait until T2 to check how that is going!

All the time. The Powerbar gels work great. A 2 to 1 ratio of the vanilla and the tangerine gels makes a very tasty combination. My Garmin alerts me every 15 minutes and intake a small amount with water.

I don’t use Gels, but I do use concentrated Roctane in my bottles for nutrition. I calculate how many calories I want to take in over the race, use the appropriate amount of Roctane (takes a bit of patience mixing it all initially, do it the night before and fridge it) and just mark off the appropriate amount per hour.

Where do you get your maltodextrin at?

CarboPro or CarboMax are brands you can find at nutrition stores, and they both dissolve easily. You could add it with powdered electrolyte drink mix for a good flavored higher calorie mix. Clif has a really good Lemonade flavor in powder.

Where do you get your maltodextrin at?

in austria you get it in any pharmacy or sports nutrition shop.

have done this for training/ two ironmans and several more halfs.

up to 16 gels in a bottle i have done. even added extra salt.

works great with power bar gels. you can mix flavors if you like.

just set your timer and drink every 15 or 20m to remind yourself. it takes a while to learn how to pace yourself through a bottle for different distances, but it beats the hell out of any other way of carrying fuel on board, IMO.

How many calories does the above mix equate to?

Hammer Gel mixes pretty well.

does the powerederd roctane work better than gels? As far as supper concentrating a mixture, would the powerder be an easier solution?

I do it a lot when I am mountain biking. I have found out that chocolate hammer gel does not mix very well. No issues with the other flavors. My favorite is to mix the peanut butter chocolate flavor. It is just the right flavored watered down for me.

The Hammer gels mix well. I’m not very picky but prefer the fruity flavors in water. One or two oz. for a 24 oz. bottle.Try it in training first.
