Long time lurker, first time poster. Go easy on me…
I’m looking to upgrade my lame triple to a compact double. I’ve heard some people saying they have problems with shifting performance on the standard 50/34 set-up. So I’m thinking, instead of going 50/34 & 11/23, to go 50/36 and 12/25. Basically the same low end gear but I’d lose one high end gear.
Any recommendations?
I have a compact and have used both 50/36 & 50/34 setup withour shifting problems. I have a campy front derailluer designed for compacts, and that has made the shifting smoother and quicker, but I didn’t have any problems with the standard front derailleur prior. Campy makes a few compact ft derailleurs as dose IRD and Shimano is rummored to have one coming out soon. I ride everyday with a 50/36 matched with either an 11-21 or 11-23 cassette depending on which bike and where I’m riding. If you need the extra climbinig gear, I’d go with an 50/34 matched with an 11-23 cassette and install ird’s new ft derailleur.
no shifting problems but cross over is a bit of a problem. I run 36/52 had 34/50 but not very useful in my case. I would just keep the triple and worry about the compact for the next bike.
