Gassy during IM. Anyone use Semithicone?

About 6hrs. into training (long ride or BRIC) my GI system stops working properly and my stomach generates tons of gas - I start burping like crazy - its quite intense. The bloatiness makes it tough to bike or run with any intensity.

I have my first IM in 10 days and I still haven’t solved the nutrition problem. My question is: has anyone experimented with Semithicone pills (i.e. brand names include: Ovol, Gas-X, etc.) during a race. Simethicone is an oral anti-foaming agent used to reduce bloating, discomfort and pain caused by excess gas in the stomach or intestinal tract.

Thanks.
Mark.

It’s only 10 days before… Are you going to be doing any more training of the duration that this would occur? If you are you could try. I wouldn’t try it for the first time during the race. It may cause other problems including trading gas for diarrhea.

Maybe you are taking in too many calories on the bike? 300/hr should be the max.

Too much sodium can cause problems too. So can fructose, especially in the heat.

Most nutrition issues are pacing issues. Are you riding too hard?

I tend to swallow a lot of air in the swim, and lately have also discovered that certain nutrition products (including Nuun, which I love, but had to eliminate from long training and racing) cause me to be very gassy and bloated during the bike and run. Hard to get aero, hard to increase intensity, etc.

I have used Gas-X in long races before without difficulty and no adverse side effects. Only took one pill/dose. I used some at IM Austria this year, and I think used some at IMF in 2005. And no, I didn’t test it out ahead of time. You may consider doing a test workout this weekend with it, just in case…since you have a little time before IMC.
I have also taken Pepto Bismol tablets…that was at a race where I was so gassed up I could hardly walk. Not sure if it was the Pepto that helped, or more likely the fact that I ended up laying down for 10 minutes to get things moving along inside and finally relieved the bloating a little.

Good luck! I understand that frustration all too well.
