So I was on a bike ride yesterday and some kitted out roadie rides by me the other direction wearing some sort of gas mask looking thing. My riding companion and I commented on how disturbing the guy looked, and how unusual it is. I had never seen anything like it. Then, not 10 minutes later, we see some guy running and wearing a similar mask. Also obviously an athlete, not a hobby jogger. What is going on with these things, anyone know?
This is what you saw I imagine: http://www.trainingmask.com/
“endorsed” by plenty of professional athletes, from my understanding it’s probably not an effective altitude training tool.
Giant waste of money too.
.
Probably training masks meant to simulate high altitude training. I think they just restrict air. I don’t have any experience with them.
There have also been some masks made specifically for filtering pollen. They look much more like a typical respirator mask, but with only one filter element.
Training Mask.
Ignorance at best.
I know a few MMA guys that use them and I’ve been trying to get them to stop (just like I’ve been trying to get them to stop cutting 20 lbs. for fights).
Here’s the sequence…
-
Training Mask markets to triathletes because they are gullible and will buy almost anything. Some fall for it but soon learn they don’t help (and probably hinder) training gains. Triathletes stop buying.
-
Training Mask markets to cross fitters because they are gullible and will buy almost anything. Almost catches on in the CF community because it makes training feel harder, and in cross fit if it feels like you’re going to die it must be good. Soon people figure out that it doesn’t actually help (and likely hinder) your training.
-
Training Mask markets to MMA fighters because they’ve been hit in the head a bunch of times and base a lot of their training methods on “beliefs”. A lot of them still use it. Hopefully soon we will see these as a funny/sad anecdote that is no longer sold because it’s an absolute fraud.
It’s a mask that restricts the amount of air you can breath . . . .kind of a poor man’s version of altitude training.
Surprised you saw obvious athletes wearing one. Around here I see them often still and usually it’s those out of shape folks trying to use them to get in shape quicker. We have quite a few guys that go on runs with their actual gas masks also. Good to know what it feels like to move and run with that in case you need it but most of them aren’t getting a lot out of it.
I use a filter mask daily and it restricts. But primary reason is pollution - brake dust, particulates. It’s horrible on busy streets at intersections etc.
I did notice a +ve training effect and I believe it’s as simple as resistance for the diaphragm other breathing muscles.
I can’t see how that simulates altitude training.

Altitude training without the benefits of altitude training. This does nothing to alter your blood chemistry. It just makes it harder to breathe. Same effect as breathing through a straw.
That is probably it. Thanks for responding.

I have never used one . . .I just saw a bunch of college football players wearing them and was like WTF is that and used the interwebs for some research.
I’ve heard some say the training masks can be harmful, killing brain cells. Is this true?
i’m beginning to believe these sorts of things are a long-term social experiment on the gullibility of this market. it must be the same researcher that got a big segment of trigeeks to spend $100 on socks and $1000s on boots to make your legs recover faster.
Training Mask is basically like voluntarily getting asthma. As somebody who involuntarily has asthma, it makes me wonder what is wrong with people’s brains.
Also, who honestly believes that their diaphragm is their limiter for aerobic fitness?
The most astonishing thing about this whole charade is Leanda Cave.

I think the problem there is mixing up cause and effect…
It is the same reason why I laugh when watching pro football teams breathe 100% O2 on the sidelines during games at sea level. No real effect since hemogloblin is already almost 100% loaded already.
But just like this stupid training mask people will believe almost anything and claim it helps

At one point the Denver Nuggets would set up equipment for that stuff to the visiting team’s bench, for psychological reasons.
I use one when I do intervals in the pool.

Maybe they play some type of wind instrument and are training for a performance?
