Garmin won't turn on!

Curious if anyone’s got any tips on how I can fix this or if it’s cooked. Basically, I plug it in to charge and it will say charge complete straight away and i can turn it on as long as it’s attached to the computer, but it won’t turn on at all otherwise. I googled it and tried a suggestion of pushing a combination of buttons, which didn’t work either. I’ve also tried leaving it attached to the computer to charge for a long time, despite what the watch reads… I appreciate any feedback!

I had a similar problem, the combination of buttons to reset the watch worked. Although, not sure how old your device is, there is a limit on the charge cycles of the batteries.

Same thing happened to me. I called the 800 number for Garmin support (found it in my manuel) and they lead me through a series of buttons to push to re-set my Forerunner 305.

Push the “Mode” and “lap/reset” button simultaneously for ~ 3 seconds. Release, then press power on.

This has happended to mine I think 3 times. First time I was ready to take it back out of frustration, now I just find it an odd quirk. Happens the same way you descibed, after it goes on the charger.

Now, I may have the button combo mixed up. If this doesn’t work try the mode and start button together. If that still doesn’t work, google “how to reset garmin 305”.

I had the same problem with my edge 305 and this is the answer I got from support. The first option worked fine for me.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. You may want to try a hard re-boot and a master reset. The hard re-boot will not erase any user data but the master reset will reset it all. The hard re-boot is done by holding down Mode + Lap/Reset for 5 seconds. Then try turning on the unit.

To perform the master reset you will want to press and hold the Mode button down while the unit is off. Then power on the unit while you are holding it down. If successful the unit will ask if you want to erase all user data, select yes.

You may also want to try the above two options while the unit is on the charging dock.

If neither of those options work the unit will need to come in for repair.

I’ve tried the suggested mode + reset + power button combo and it didn’t work. I tried another that was suggested as well which didn’t work…

I’m hoping the batter isn’t cooked! It will turn on while in the cradle, but then shuts off immediately when I take it off…

That is a little different than what was happening to mine, it would not turn on whether in the charger or not. Just in case though, it is Mode/Lap together, then power button.

From the way you descibe it though, it does sound like the battery. How old is it?

Welcome to Club Garmin 305. I’m on my third one because of this. Garmin customer care has really taken care of me. I think a replacement one is $85.

Mine’s about 3 years old now. I’ll have to give customer support a call and see what they can do for me. I’d be willing to pay the $85 for a replacement for sure. Sucks though for timing 'cause I’m racing IMWA in a couple of weeks and it would have been nice to have! thanks for the help folks.

Turnaround on my relacement was 2, maybe 3 days max. Unless you’re racing IMAZ, you should have enough time to get the replacement.

Was the other combo you tried the mode + reset buttons together for about 10 seconds (and then after releasing those two buttons, pressing the power button by itself)? I’ve had to use that combo 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years or so (the last time was at about 4:30 this morning!)

Ya unfortunately it is. I think it’s cook. I popped it open to take a look and little bits on the inside are all corroded… gonna try customer support and see what they say…

I’ve had both things happen. It would work on the cradle, but as soon as removed it would shut off …means battery. Had to send it away to get replaced. Was under warranty so don’t know the cost.

Since fixed I’ve also had the won’t turn on a few times. (It wouldn’t turn on on the cradle either). The two button combo reset for 3 secs always works.

So sounds like the battery.

I wish your options worked for me.

I had to send my BRAND NEW Garmin 310xt back before it even saw daylight after trying all of Garmins’ online support tricks ( pressthisbutton , then that master reset , etc. )
Still waiting for a new unit to test out on my long run this week.

Although I have had 4 or 5 Polar units over the past 12 years , never had one arrive not working.

Garmin Quality Control needs to be improved , step 1.

Let’s see if they can redeem themselves.

Sincerely,
