I have the Garmin 935, what is a good upgrade to this one?
I’m specially keen on trying the suggested session trainings.
Also, what is the very top of the line Garmin for triathlon right now? I want to get the 2nd best one lol, like the previous gen of the best watch there, or the second best of the new ones… you know what I mean?
The 945 is the current flagship tri watch but it’s three years old and the successor to the 935. So right now you have the second best/previous gen. Rumor has it the 955 is coming out soon… like next month.
There is a 945lte that came out in the last 6 mo but it’s basically the same watch with an lte connection. I would also wait for the 955 to come out. I believe it’s rumored to have a solar option too
There is also the fenix line but it’s largely the same as the 9xx line with a larger screen and more durable body. Dcrainmaker jokingly calls the 9xx line the fenix plastic edition

the 945 is in principle the current top of the line in tri but about to be superseded by the 955 so expect some deals to be available. a couple of other options which sound like what you’re after:
the 745 is like half a gen ahead of the 945 but is slightly smaller in both physical size and battery
the 945 LTE is also half a gen ahead and adds much more than just LTE. also a touch smaller physically but similar battery life to the 945
then you have the fenix line which is essentially the same but with metal in the casing instead of plastic - prettier, heavier. F6 = 945, F7 = 955 but already available
945/945LTE is the current top of the range.
I wouldnt say its worth upgrading, I’ve had the 935, 945 and the 945LTE and the main difference from 935 to 945, is different sleep tracking, suggested Daily workouts, more accurate VO2max and running time predictions and more activities
Yeah, the Q is… what do you want in a new watch that your current watch does not provide? Maybe features, maybe renewed battery life, maybe something else. Until we know how your current watch is failing you, recommendations for a new watch are a shot in the dark.

I would point out that rumour has been there for over 2 years. As in for 2 years it’s been ‘next month’ give or take a few weeks linking to any industry show, or random season change. You may be right, and there’s a lot of logic to finally get the fenix 7 internals into a forerunner case, but I’ve seen nothing concrete on that rumour. I’d also express some degree of surprise if they did release the FR955 in the next month given the FR945 LTE is not only relatively new, it’s actually only just physically arrived in the last month in some regions.
FWIW I’m still on the 935 and not missing much, other than optical HR for swimming that I would use, garmin pay, and the newer sleep/SPO2 measures.
The Fenix is just too deep for me, it’s a struggle now to get the FR935 under my shirt sleeves, so hoping they retain the slight size / weight reduction on any future FR955.
Change watch when the old one dies, really no reason at all to change before! Unless you like to waste money, and then ask yourself if those money could not make you happier in other places of life? Vacation, early retirement etc
I disagree on the 945 recommendations if “top of the line” is your criteria. The Fenix 7/Epix 2 are multisport watches, and are a generation ahead in terms of HR sensor and GPS chipset, and also some new features eg. Stamina. The Epix 2 comes with a much nicer screen, at a penalty to battery life.
The Fenix 7 (non solar) versions are slightly cheaper than the solar/sapphire versions.
The FR9x5 line is the same as the Fenix, just the FR955 that would match the Fenix 7 isn’t out yet. FR935=Fenix 5, FR945=Fenix 6.
The odd one is the 945LTE that hasn’t yet been matched by the Fenix range.
There are plus and minus for the epix. Depends on your use case as to if it’s better or worse for you. There’s almost an egg timer shape to the garmin range. At the bottom you have choices depending on your sport - you have to choose features. Then in the middle you get the lot. And then at the very top you again have choices according to your specific needs/sports so that you aren’t compromising at all.

I’d suggest keeping your 935 until it breaks.
What makes you think the suggested trainings will be any more value than the ‘Recommended recovery times’ utter nonsense Garmin watches calculate.
In my view the value in Garmin watches is amazing battery life and incredible reliability, not gimmicky features.
Early adopters beware. Garmin in my long and fraught experience with the brand has a long history of launching products with issues, best bet IMO is to wait at least 12 months before buying a newly launched product.

I want the 955 to be a bigger watch and utilize the full case size for the screen.
Bigger than the 945 LTE version. I’d be fine if it maintains the size of the 935 body but is a full screen. That would be what I want. No thick black border.
I’d be interested in the recommended workouts and a better sleep/training status/VO2 max improved metrics, just a better record of all my metrics really.
What? and no Strava, Garmin, Trainingpeaks and everything else? who will know how much and when I train? also, how would I know my training counts? no way! (lol)

I’m not sure sure that Garmin is the pinnacle of reliability.
My edge 500 had button failures.
I’ve had multiple failures of the barometer on my 935s and just about everyone I know with a Garmin watch that has a barometer in it has had at least one (if not multiple) barometer failures. As far as I know, this has been an issue from the at least the 910 days and is still an issue in the 945 range. Only time will tell if their firmware fix for disabling the temperature sensor during swimming will resolve it.
My wife has gone through 3 735s due to button failures where it just randomly starts thinking the lap button has been pressed.
The band on both one of my 935s broke after about 2 years and in a similar time frame on one of my wife’s 735.
I’ve never had a Garmin HR strap survive more than 2 battery changes.
My 520 has been rock solid though.
All that said, their customer service and refurbished replacement policy is top notch.
In my experience, there’s really no reason ti get the 945 over the LTE unless you really want LTE. Get a 2nd hand watch that doesn’t work cheap somewhere, contact garmin and get a brand new one at a much lower price. My 945 turned off and never came back on, outside of warranty, they sent me a new one for $150 (if they couldnt fix the old one)
