For those who have used the Garmin Vivoactive, can you add an app that allows you to measure an open water swim? My better half is interested in the Vivoactive rather than the Vivoactive HR but has heard it will measure open water swims with an app but can’t find it anywhere in print. Any help is appreciated.

Personally I just use it in running mode for an OWS. It will be waaay off if you have it on your wrist this way (see below), but OK under your cap.
There are apps, but not accurate for distance due to the Vivoactive limitations, but I typically know the courses swimming, so no big deal to me. It will not last for an Ironman, though…
Yeah, mine ran out of juice 2min from the finish of my last 70.3 (did keep the event in memory up to that point though, so I didn’t lose the data).
Great “Swiss army knife” watch, but not suitable for IMs or 50milers.
