Is there a particular reason you want to use the Foretrex versus the Forerunner series? The Foretrex is pretty old school, large, and not ideally suited to the multisport athlete (unless the sports include fishing and hiking…).

well i seem to have missed the boat on a lot of the major clearance sales for the old forerunner models. The foretrex interested me because it sounded like it got a lot better signal. I seem to see a lot of runners lose there gps signals when racing in cities or remote locations, so it’d be nice to avoid that seeing how thats when i would want it the most!

I use a foretrex 401 for my runs in new territory.

As far as I know, the gps receiver for the foretrex and the forerunner are the same.

The routing function is different on the foretrex and makes it somewhat easier in some cases to input a course you have never run before and follow it.

You also get barometric altitude, barometric altitude can make running work calculations like the govss calculations in topofusion and raceday much more reliable. The forerunners don’t have barometric altitude.

On the minus side, it doesn’t show pace, only speed. Also there isn’t an easy way to pause the workout and resume, nor is there an elegant way to start a new workout without deleting the previous workouts from the watch memory.

All in all, if barometric altitude isn’t that big of a deal to you, I think in the end you’d be better off with a forerunner 305 for typical running scenarios.

You can pickup the FR305’s for about $125 at most major online places.

Remote locations shouldn’t be causing any issues with signal reception, though sometimes dense buildings do - although that’s even an issue for the newest units as well.
