Garmin Forerunner 301 Users: Does anyone

Does anyone who uses a Garmin Forerunner 301 use a wireless speed/cadence bike computer that does not interfere with the 301 heart rate data signal?

I use the Cateye CD3000W wireless speed/cadence unit which I love compared to my old Vetta wireless, but now that I am using the Garmin 301, it interferes with my HR data, etc when mounted on the bike.

I have two aero tubed (cable routing inside the tubes) bikes that aren’t really candidates for wired bike computers (plus I just hate wires) and am hoping that there is a wireless speed/cadence system that doesn’t interfere.

Thanks.

I have a garmin 301, and to be honest the HR monitor aspect of it is a great tool, except it doesn’t work very well and isn’t reliable in my experience so far. Are you sure it’s the wireless signal interfering with it? Try disconnecting the cat-eye, likely it might still seem interupted…and isn’t the bike computer at all causing it.

I think pretty much if you blow air through the signal it will interfere with it, if it’s working at all. Other than that , great training tool…too bad about the hr monitor. Good luck with it…look for the garmin 401 next year to be updated with a HR monitor newer than the original Polar technology of the 1980’s.

Thanks JCL.

I agree that the HR signal is weak in general, but it seems to work fine for me in outdoor runs and swims. When I run on the treadmill and bike outside or on a trainer the electronics of the Cateye or treadmill seem to interfere. I hope the next version is truly waterproof and that the HR is much better as you mentioned.

I seem to have the exact same setup as you. Forerunner 301 and Cateye CD3000W, with an areo tube bike (Cervelo Soloist), and have not had any problems at all in terms of interference. The stats on the Cateye (speeds, cadence, etc), nor on the Forerunner including heart rate, are as expected. I even keep the Forerunner mounted directly beside, the Cateye.

I must be lucky, but I know that I am running the latest version of the Forerunner firmware, and I believe the last version of the Cateye (can check once I get home for the version #).

You might be having an Cateye battery issue, or need to reset the Cateye to use a different channel.

I too use the Garmin 301 and the Cateye device. I haven’t noticed any interference from the Cateye but have to agree that the HR component of the 301 leaves much to be desired.

I have found that I HAVE to use the electrode gel (I use Buh-Bump) to get any kind of decent reading, but once I sweat that stuff off, my HR starts jumping all over the place.

What I would hope they could do is release a new HR strap (I think that is the main problem) so I don’t have to buy a whole new unit. But I don’t see that happening.

Good call and thanks for responding. I didn’t even think of changing the channel of the Cateye (silly me  ). I will try that and hope that it works. Thanks.

I have a polar 720 and the cadence feature doesn’t seem to interfere with the HR readings. But as everyone else has stated, the HR on the Garmin 301 is so unreliable, I rarely rely on it.
