Probably the biggest difference between the forerunner and a bike computer is going to be the accuracy of your current speed. A bike computer is going to be more accurate in that area but I still use my forerunner all of the time (or both). I find fhe forerunner accurate enough to easily see which side of the road I’m riding on let alone distance. I also like the extra data it is logging like time climbing, descending, ability to create maps etc. You do need a clear view of the sky for the forerunner to work though.
I’ve heard from quite a few folks that the hr monitor doesn’t work all that well on the 301 so if that is important to you, you might consider waiting until the next years model comes out to see if they have made improvements. If the hr monitor isn’t as important to you or you already have one, then you can go with the 201 which is what I have. Overall I use it more than even a regular watch when running and cycling. It is light and I don’t even notice it.
I have had the 201 for about a year and half now. I agree with what jtaylor said pretty much. I have had very few problems with not reading the sattelites. I live in a very cloudy area(windward side of oahu) and have only lost the signal a handful of times and usu. just for a few seconds.(Mostly blocked by buildings or structures) I do use it mostly for running but have used it on the bike and have been happy with it.
thanks guys

The 2006 model is much smaller, uses a supposedly better antenna system, and looks less like a Communicator from star trek on your wrist. The prototype 305 is still ugly, at least by the picture I saw, but I am waiting for this one to come out before jumping onto the gps/HR monitor wagon. The 2006 305 edge looks pretty nice too for pure cyclists (bike computer/gps/HR monitor/altimeter/sushi chef)
I have both … I bought the Garmin after, mostly for running. It gave me HR which I didn’t have on the bike and all the history stuff. The one thing not on the garmin is cadence … So for now, unitl I can justify a PowerTap … they are both attached to the handle bar. I’m an idiot for gadgets …
Garmin added cadence to the 305 edge for 2006.
I have a 301 no problems had it one year. Don’t take it in the water! I use my polar for Tri’s.
I have the 301… I use it for cycling tons and LOVE it… I have the coolest GoogleEarth 3D maps of my IMC and IMH rides from this year. Since I don’t like racing with a bike compter, I stuck it under my seat and it worked awesome. I can email you the files if you want to see them. Pretty cool. I find the current speed accurate enough for me.
I PM’d you regarding something entirely different.
